football vs. football

I understand what we Yanks call soccer has much more to do with the human foot than the sport we Americans have deemed worthy of the title "football." I like American football, I don't really get into soccer but once every four years.

Though you may be right about the metric system, I'm haven't started calling your sport football because it would simply be too confusing. Then what would I call the sport I like watching? Football II?

This is my challenge to you Wanks: come up with a suitable replacement name for American football (which is way too long to use). I'm more than willing to stop calling your game with the fruity colored cards soccer, if, and only if, you can think up a replacement name for our sport. Yeah, and before it's even suggested, let me say "pussy yank ball" won't cut it.

We don't use the metric system, though. Maybe that is how we are right about it.

They sometimes call it 'gridiron' over here. I prefer to call it 'foreplay for homofag steroid junkies'.

it's weird that american football is thought to be wussier than it's less-padded counterparts, because it's a brutal game. playing the way they do without pads most people's football careers would not last a game, let alone a season.

please.

they wear pads in ice hockey too, do you think they shouldnt? i think the amount of injuries in the sport warrants the pads.

i think Gridiron is a more than suitable name.

i thought that was it, mostly, but i hear that sort of thing a lot. people are weird about sports. here we have the Canadian Football League, and people vehemently insist that it's better because the ball is a bit bigger and we only have 3 downs as opposed to 4. fucking pansy-ass nfl can't handle 3 downs, it needs 4. their baby hands are too soft and delicate for our GIANT CANADIAN BALL.
man, that last sentence could have turned out badly.

i have watched rugby, it's actually pretty popular here, and it seems that there is a lot of pulling shirts and whatnot. a lot of violence as well, of course. what's the length of the average rugby career?

Yeah, not sure if you limeys realize it, but rugby is one of the most popular collegiate sports here. Not the big money or commercialization of say college basketball or football, but quite popular.

Rugby is impressive and worthy, one of my favorite sports. It isn't comparable to American football in terms of speed of collision, however. A scrum is one thing; a blind-side, full-speed collision with a 250-pound man is quite another.

The pads and helmets are more than necessary.

throwing round stones down a patch of ice toward a target while other men sweep said patch is a force of nature, and cannot be destroyed.

Paint what rugby are you talking about though? Rugby Union or Rugby League? The former is played with a team of 15 and has rules about not tackling above the waist, the latter is played with 13 and you can take someone down from the neck down. How long are their carreer? Jonathan Davies has been playing for about 15 years at top level.

Phil I don't know if you are wrong, or if i was in an especially brutal rugby union team but that no tackling above the waist thing is bollocks as far as i can remember. i know you cannot tackle above the neck though, because i was penalised for doing that a few times when i played many years back.

oh yeah i found a website with the rules and you are talking crap about being tackled above the waist. the rules are that the maximum height of the tackle can not exceed shoulder height.

the rule is:"Playing the man without the ball" and all forms of dangerous tackling including early, late and stiff arm "tackling" or tackling or attempting to tackle a player around the neck or head or above the line of the shoulders must be punished severely. Players who willfully resort to this type of foul play must be ordered off the field. Advantage should be played, but a penalty try must be awarded if the dangerous tackle prevents a probable try.

I beleive you will find that the rules to Rugby Union changed in the last five years. Technically tackles above the waist are illegal, but I think it is still at the referees discretion as to how to deal with them. The high tackle above the waist can cause 'upending' which is why it was outlawed in Union. But it is still at the ref's descretion, depending on advanatge, timing etc etc

Of course, we forgot to mention hand-offs.

BTW, a post to the rules of Rugby Union for Men might be better than one for Womens Rugby.

I also just asked my friend who plays for the Middlesex University first team. He told me that you can tackle anywhere above the neck so long as you are embracing the the person you are tackling, you cannot be in a closed position, but you can tackle above the waist.

another website with the rules. Admit it, you are wrong.

A player must not tackle (or try to tackle) an opponent above the line of the shoulders. A tackle around the opponent’s neck or head is dangerous play. from the website below.

yes and I just mentioned in my edit, ask him about 'upending'. That is why tackling above the waist is a descretionary tackle by the ref. Besides, my point was that Union is a pofs game compared to League.
