Hmm... the version I read, in the San Jose Mercury News, was drastically different. Just goes to show what effect word-of-mouth can have.
In the version I read, the gift was graciously accepted in a ceremony attended by a US dignitary, after a Masai who was attending college at Stanford went home and explained what had happened to his people.
Because of the logistics involved, the dignitary and the Masai agreed that the cattle would be sold in the local market, and the proceeds derived therefrom would be spent entirely on Masai tribal jewelry, to be shipped back to the White House.
A lot less sinister, no?
