Well, except for dad, but sometimes I would prefer total solitude.

alone...being alone to me means that i am isolated either mentally or physically from other people for a period of time.

Well if you mean wholly alone, with no one and nowhere to go...wholly alone, Id rather be in physical pain, which was my original answer.
I like to climb trees though, I could sit up there alone for hours, or go find a beautiful place to sit and make love to the silence and soak in the earth, or sit out in the rain - as long as I know I can end my aloneness anytime I want in a meaningful way.

Quite simply, one's views of any state of being can often be influenced by whether the person is in that state by choice or by circumstance.

Err... basically, it sucks to be alone if you had no choice in the matter. But if it's your decision, then it's tolerable or even enjoyable.

being alone, to me, means that nobody is around.
i've never been alone in a survival sense, so i have no real strong feelings on the matter. it's too easy to communicate in these crazy modern times to be completely without people for long.

i'm a pretty literal person in a lot of ways. lonely maybe, not alone. though i don't really get lonely either. that usually turns into amusement. most things turn into amusement, because i'm easily amused. especially by my own misfortune.

I would say being alone to me ment no family, or friends, or sense of belonging. No meaningful/close connections with any other human for an elongated period of time. I think as a member of a social animal group it’s distressing especially to a young person.

Being by my self means a time to gather my thoughts, take time to evaluate things, remember things or just absorb the things around me. As long as I can end my being by my self when I choose.
