Squeegie Kids

Been there done that got the t-shirt. I always asked, and never touched the cars if they said no. This, however, was not common practice.

Recently my mother was driving me to work. She had her window slightly opened, and we were stopped at a light, when suddenly a squeegie kid (kid being used loosely, he was about 30) approached the car. My mother shook her head and waved her hand saying "no". He ignored her and put the squeegie on the window. She started yelling when he said something along the lines of "My feet are sore. Fuck you bitch" and spat at the passenger side, right into the slightly opened window. Spit landed on her face.

She reported it to the police, but he hasn't been back.

In a situation like that, and knowing full well that anyone could be armed (we've had five hijackings over the last week), what would you have done?

I am starting to hate street kids with a passion. Most of them are just lazy assholes who don't want to conform. Yeah, it's hard to survive on the streets, however there are always shelters to go to, or to take messages while looking for jobs. If there's a will, there's almost always a way.

May he be stricken by lightning, or with someone who pulls the same crap on him.

/vent

I worked at a homeless shelter for quite some time.

I stopped when MORE THAN ONE one asked "Do you guys have any chicken, I don't like beef"

Before anybody like that got near me, the windows would be rolled up, the doors locked, and I would have my angry moron face firmly in place. I smile faintly at people like that, pretend like I don't understand what they're talking about, and start twitching or other nervous repetitive motions.

They catch on and move on. It's not worth it engaging with these people, especially angrily.

However, one time I was in a thrift store and came out to find my windows washed and the shithead standing there waiting. This was my old Toyota that I never washed.

I started screaming at him and otherwise acting hysterical, Oh my GOD, what have you done, that is horrible, that was an art project and now you've ruined it. Etc. He looked confused and went away.

We never did. We would walk to the lake or (while construction was going on) to a hose. The cement trucks would often let you refill the bucket too. They were usually okay with that.

Yeah, acting neurotic with them will only get you killed. Want to send some passive squeegie kids to Toronto then? We can swap.

I started working with a group just recently. We go out to the beach front and try to round up as many "at risk" and homeless kids as we can, feed them, give them condoms (don’t start) ,clothes and get them counseling (non religious) and start a progress file because we try to get them out of their situation. There is a troubled youth center there as well that offers up a place for them to stay. We are limited though because we don’t want to put them in a situation to be made to go back to their homes, cause they would just run away again and unwilling to go anywhere for help.
I don’t want to give details of the kids I worked with so far really but they all have a different story, not all lazy, not all assholes and non conformists aren’t all that bad unless they are hurting people. These kids are untrusting of adults, often severely abused and would rather sleep under the peer than in their own home. Some do bad things, but I think youll agree after consideration that lumping them up isnt very fair.

Yeah... and I was with a lot of them... and they were useless, and uncaring. They would drag people into this cult-like world, and make them afraid to go anywhere else. What kind of "family" threatens you, makes up insane stories due to boredom, stab you in the back, etc?

I know you're right, and they're not all lazy people. But I'm reminded of a lot of things I went through... maybe not the sob stories you hear from them, but the flip side of what was going on. My family was searching for me frantically for weeks. They handed out posters, and spoke with kids who were panning etc. I was never told until about a month later, a girl came up to me, handed me the poster, and said they were looking for me. Not a "you should call them" nor a "run like hell", but just giving me the heads up to make my own choice.

Time and time again you will hear of abusive households, of terrible parents, or uncaring families, but you're only hearing one side. I assure you that the longer you're out there, the more horrific these stories become. It may start as verbal abuse and end in "I was sexually abused by my father." This never happened in my case, but it wasn't uncommon to have a sort of competition to see who was worse off.

The troubled youth centre I used to go to for five-cent soup never even TOLD me my family was looking for me. I don't care if it was to protect me or not, either way they should have let me know. They could have said it the same impartial way as I was told.

As far as the chicken/beef thing goes, it's sadly true. If you're hungry, you're not picky. The number of hostels, etc. are phenominal. Why on earth would you bother getting a job when you get free blankets, free meals, and don't have to deal with taxes or "society"?

I think instead of making more shelters, we should get rid of them. Put in a work program instead.

GOOOO WORKHOUSES!
i figure that putting needy people to work in unskilled labour/factory jobs, feeding and housing them, isn't a bad idea. there's probably a downside i'm overlooking in my enthusiasm, but i don't care. WORKHOUSES!

To me seems some of the anger you exude on this subject is misplaced? Rather than blame these kids you kept company with you might want to take some personal responsibility for…personal responsibility is also a theme of our group you see. I’m not a fan of the victim mentality.

Had a friend that had his car kicked by a squeege kid.
They don't seem to understand that they have been obsolete since the invention of the automatic windshield wiper. So next time one comes up to your car just turn on your windshield wiper and smile.

If homeless kids are able to find alternative work, it is going to have an inflationary effect on the price of a blowjob.

Its weird to go to Toronto and see kids that look exactly like me sprawled across the sidewalk with their hand out. That was the biggest shock for me there. I am used to old bums and crackheads with no teeth in rags mumbling about change in Detroit.

I wouldn't want anybody touching my car with a squegee, rag or anything else. I'd tell them to fuck off.

If you wanted to share, I'm sure I would have heard about it.I never said your program is worthless, and obviously I don't know a lot about it (never clicked the link).

I think it's great that you have a program for younger kids. It's even better that you help them get to work. As I said in one of my posts previously, many shelters will take messages for people looking for work.

I'm happy for you that you're comfortable with taking on responsibility. God only knows I have had to do the same. The worst part was facing my family and friends after, whom I completely abandoned. Admitting that I screwed up hasn't been easy, and it's still hard to talk with my family about what I put them through.

I just deleted a huge long segment of post in order to give you the gist of things.

It was my choice to leave, and to associate with the people I associated with. It was in my best interest not to put myself in a situation where I would be, likely, alone and in danger. When you're threatened, and not on the best side of the police, who do you turn to? But anyway, that being the gist, congratulations on trying to help whoever it is you're helping. Also, you should consider the fact that Toronto is reknown (I kid you not) for all of the freebies and shelters. People from other cities push their street people to Toronto, because, apparently small cities don't want to deal with problems like that.

I still maintain that opening a shelter that runs more like a co-op would be a grand idea. Get them to do their own cleaning, laundry, cooking etc. and provide them with a place to live and help get jobs. That, to me, is a marvelous solution. Housing people without giving them counselling, job training, or general life skills is not a solution as far as I'm concerned.
