Would you be interested in group reads?
Yes, without a doubt! Time issues considered, of course.
Count me as tentative. Not sure yet.
Probably not.
Absolutely not.

Anyone interested in a sort of "asylum book club?"

This won't happen too soon (not until another month or so), but if anyone is interested in doing a scheduled group read of a particular book, I think it would be really fun.

We could pick a book that at least 10 people agree on, have someone set the reading schedule (so we're all on track), and then people could take turns each week explicating the set of chapters that are "due" that week.

A while ago, some of us had started up the idea of a book reviews page, which would provide reviews of books, give links to amazon.com and such, and help garner a wee bit of money to help pay for the site's maintenance and software. It would hardly turn a profit, but would at least be a little helpful.

Perhaps we could combine reviews and book club together, to serve many purposes at once?

I know there are a lot of people here who read for fun, as well as for more serious purposes, and I think it would be fun to get something like this going. We could mix it up between classics, modern reads, and hot-off-the-press numbers.

What do ya'll think of this?

I think that's a great idea. Really!!!

As long as the book topics do not include Neo-nazi ultra left-wing feminist viewpoints.

Ok, good...new thought...I'm thinking that starting with a classic might be a good choice, because the book will be easier to find at a library or used book store, which will help those for whom buying books is prohibitive. Plus, some people will have read it already, which will help if folks fall behind in reading a bit. There will be someone to pick up the discussion if needed.

We don't have to go with "Jane Eyre" or something like that...can always go with humor, plays, Machiavelli, Hemingway, etc.

edit: and a lot of classics are online for free, as well...

I'd be in.

The Pearl or Man with a Maid Vol I, II & III would be my suggestions.

"Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson

Might as well get started with something insanely funny and easy to find.

you know I have that.. or.. my ex roomate has my copy.. but I have yet to read it.. actually I really found I didn't want to read it.. but.. I could..

my suggestions for classics:

Tropic of Cancer - Henry Miller (which I have.. but have only read the first couple chapters.. got too busy)

The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas (which I've read mabye 10-20 times.. but am always eager to read again)

Crash - J G Ballard (not REALLY a classic.. but I've wanted to read this for a while)

or anything by Italo Calvino

i would definitely be interested, so long as we picked books that are less than 10.00 to purchase if it's something i wouldn't normally read. i'm all for spending the money on something that i think i'll read again, but if i'm just checking it out for a book club, i'd like to keep it as cheap as possible.

count me in but my only consideration is that i get my books from the library and there may be waiting lists for certain books, which means i might not get them in the time frame pertinent.

for those who aren't able to shell out a lot for new books.. (I'm pretty broke myself) you can try looking for used books (if you don't have a shop nearbye)

barnes and noble

all book stores . com

alibris

ebay

amazon

i just meant that newer books are usually only available in hardcover, and the local library doesn't have a large quantity of them. so if a new book is chosen, and i'm not particularly interested in the style/genre, i'm not going to shell out 20.00 for the book in order to participate.

I like the idea... and for those who aren't poor in a crazy way, we really should set up links to Amazon through an Asylum account or whatever, so this place gets a piece of the profit off of each of our purchases. I like the idea of trying to help support this place a little.

Count of Monte Cristo... fucking huge, but I feel like it's something I should read... as long as the reading schedule isn't hellish...

*thumbs up*

that's a good idea about the amazon thing, leaky.

only problem with that is amazon can never seem to send anything on time...but if we took delivery into account with time schedule, we'd be set.

It just now occured to me that I was signing onto a book club idea while listening to Digital Underground -- The Humpty Dance.
