Fat Camp

I heard on the radio this morning about "fat camps" where parents are sending their overweight kids for the summer.

The idea is that your overweight kid will be around other overweight kids, and feel comfortable in a swimsuit or doing activities with other "fat" kids. The camps also focus on diet and exercise.

But some say it's segregation of sorts and that it creates an unhealthy focus on weight, and sends a message that being thin is desirable.

What do you think of this? Would you send your overweight kid kid there?

here's an article about one:

The trick is not to let your kid get fat in the first place.

Summer Camps are just ways to tell your kid you hate them and don't want them around you...

I would tell the fat ass to get a job outside.. thats what I alway did... went to work in corn fields all day.. 30lbs in a month at $13/hr.

Plus I just think the kids would come back even bigger, kind of like in "camp nowhere"

Yes, but there would be fewer of them!

Only the fast ones get to go home.

"Obesity isn't just bad for the fat person, it's extremely inconsiderate to everybody else as well. Not only is it a dreadful eyesore, it's almost impossible to pass these people on the pavement or in corridors. They take up two seats on trains and buses, even though they only need one ticket. Don't give me excuses like "they can't help it, it's their glands or something" - there's only one thing that makes you fat and that's eating too much. Think about it. Where does fat come from? It comes from food you eat. There should be a maximum legal weight/height ratio. Anyone exceeding this should be put on a compulsory weight loss scheme involving no cakes. On top of this, parents should be encouraged to allow their children to ridicule obese people. Children are the most reliable ally against any social non-conformity. "Mr Greedy" shall be on school reading lists."

Segregation? Bullshit. Yet another example of wannabe intellects attempting to showcase their overblown sense of insight through analysis run amok. Such people should be sent to a camp for overthinkers.

As for sending " . . . a message that thin is desirable", it well illustrates this old adage ~ It's not whatcha say; rather, it's howya sayit. Hence, I'll say what is essentially the same thing, but word it differently: " . . . and sends a message that being overweight is unhealthy." In that regard, being overweight IS unhealthy. And, yes, I am overweight.

My kids aren't overweight. If they were, I'd certainly consider sending 'em, especially if they wanted to go.

Amen.

i wish my parents sent me to fat camp, although that wouldn't have helped much, my problem was due to my thyroid. now i'm in my twenties and although i am still quite obese, it does wonders for my self esteem knowing that being fat isn't my fault

i dont like the idea at all.

i think it isolates the children and removes them from normal society. it may help there self-esteem to be around other overweight children, but what happens when they return home from camp?

it is the parents responsibility to teach their children how to maintain a healthy diet and to promote exercise.

is it ok to be fat? sure it is. just like it is ok to be skinny.

Hmm, fat camp. It'll never work.

Unlike ordinary summer camps, where kids sneak in alcohol, these fat campers are going to be smuggling snack cakes and chocolate bars into camp via hidden compartments inside their duffle bags.

I can see it now....The fun only just begins when the lights in the camp counselors' quarters shut off. A small candle is lit and all the kids gather in a circle for a round of spin the bottle. The two chosen ones then head off to a closet together. Inside the closet awaits a Twinkie, which the kids proceed to eat from each end until their lips meet.

People get fat because they eat too many carbs and not enough fiber and protein. That's why an obese person can eat less than you and gain weight, because their metabolism is out of balance and they produce too much insulin.

Read "The Zone" by Barry Sears, or continue to pontificate in ignorance.

(I've already placed my bet on which you'll choose).

Now, how did you get so stupid? Was it a glandular thing?

that's not hard to combat. keep them tied to treadmills. at lights out, turn off treadmill, toss them a pillow. in fact, it might be more effective to make them pull plows. fat camps? NO! fat FARMS. if they want a snack, they can have all the hay they can eat in their alloted break times.
there's the fiber, pete. for protein they can eat bugs.
feel free to call me "weight loss guru buddha's penis".

As a fat child, I would have absolutely hated this.
As a fat adult, I would have wished someone had sent me. (for the wrong reasons, possibly just to place blame elseware.)
As a person who today weighs less than the did in high school.....I'm not so sure exactly how I feel.
I have been struggling with weight issues for 19 years. I can't believe it took me that long to learn this one basic truth for everyone who's overweight, and it isn't due medical problems.

That's exactly why I've lost over 50 pounds in the last 12 months.
Cutting out the fat helps too.
It really is that simple.
It sucks, but it's true.

I can tell you the my kid will not be going to fat camp.
I'll teach him how to lose weight.

i need to lose 10 lbs. would like to lose 20-25.

i don't eat tons of food but i am sure i am eating the wrong things at the wrong time of day. I never had any weight issues till the last few years.

and i refuse to give up chocolate. i don't smoke or drink, so it's my one vice.

and by the way, well done!

I know you directed yer question to BnB, but hey. It's a public forum. Anyway, you don't have to "give up chocolate". To lose the weighty, it would be helpful if you took a temporary leave from your chocolate bondage. Once you reach your desired weight, however, the keys are: 1) Pay attention; and 2) moderation.

Peder Tork is also correct. Carbohydrates, especially refined sugars, and sedentary lifestyle, are turning us into lardasses. Anyone who doesn't believe this is failing to pay attention. For example, go to the clothing section of any Walmart store. It is no coincidence that during the past 10 years, they began carrying big and tall clothing.

Amen.
