I went to Warped Tour today... talk about being a Christian in an unHoly land. I had barely heard of any of the bands, and certainly didn't fit in the the prevalent culture. Mostly, I went to be able to say that I went, and because the other option was sitting at home.

Even though I stuck out like Roseanne Barr on a nude beach, I managed to have a littl efun, and experience some cool stuff. Massive quantities of second-hand marijuana smoke, for instance. Another first, I saw a girl completely gone (GHB is my guess) carried away from the stage on some guy's shoulder. There were some really cool ten-year-old-looking kids skateboarding in the ramp thing, and doing a pretty damn good job at it. And there were dones of mucho bizzarro people everywhere - it was the stereotypical "punk-freak" congregation. All the hair colors, and mohawks, and pot, and unwashed people - wow. It also occurred to me that I was the only person I saw there wearing cross-training type tennis shoes. Everyone wore boots or Converse walking shoes or Airwalks or something like that. I was also the only person I saw who wasn't also doubling as a billboard for some band or record label. I had a run in with a mosh-pit, too... way too close to the action for me, I quickly retreated to safer ground. The crowd-surfing people were cool, the jumping up and down was cool; the six-foot plus Marines high and drunk and bent on breaking someone weren't cool.

The music itself, while not my bag of chips, was ok. NOFX, Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Eyeliners, Autopilot Off, Alkaline Trio, Good Charlotte, the Starting Line, Flogging Molly, Bad Religion, and New Found Glory. I know I heard other bands, but don't know who or what or whatever.

Anyway, this sunburnt and sore little boy just wanted to wave and say Warped Tour is worth going to, even if you don't fit in - it's a totally surreal cultural experience.

I wouldn't mind going to see NOFX or New Found Glory. But I'm not allowed in mosh pits anymore. I dunno why but when I'm in a crowd of people all having a good time I just feel bitter. If I go to the mosh pit I always get just a little carried away :\

I saw a Warped a few years ago over in Massachusetts. Those things are a real blast as long as there's a band or two you fancy. I went for the Dropkick Murphys, and ended up being totally blown away by Ozomatli.

'Course, we had our own travails, like the massive, sustained cloudburst that tagged us midway through. Whee.
