So this whole painting thing

Newest painting and thought I'd share. It's not the best picture quality, but you get the basic idea. It's of New Orleans (hence the nasty brown water). After living there for three weeks while attending the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts I really fell in love with it. I mean the place is filthy, worn down, poverty- stricken, extremely dangerous, and slowly but surely sinking into the mighty Mississippi River, but there's something truly beautiful about the place.

Here ya go.

Catfat is so cute! and so is her painting. I could see it hanging in some funky office down in the French Quarter. The pic is a bit blurry, but still decent.

Straight lines wouldn't do this thing justice. The wild curvy lines give it more life, I think.

Nice one. :+:

I like it. A lot in some ways. Not so much, in others. You mention the city is dirty, etc, but I don't get that feeling from your painting - aside from the brown water, of course. I like the lines and color. I'm just not sure if it captures your actual feeling of the place. Which, isn't too important, it's still a very well done peice of work.

I'm just waiting for one of those 3d-rendering software "artists" to come debate how actualy painting is the same to draging and dropping some pre-canned items onto a screen are compared.

So you're saying collage and photography aren't art either, Wraith?

Yeah, I was thinking of making a dirtier, but I opted to try to capture more of the energy behind the filth than the filth itself. I think ppl would get the wrong idea if I just made it dirty. Maybe I'll try to capture more of that side in a future piece.
I'm still just surprised that The Wraith actually gave a compliment for once, even if the post still manages to piss off plenty of ppl. lol

i think collage and photography are...different than media in which you create from scratch. i would even say lesser, though that's not to say worse, just easier.
in my experience.

I think because they're easier then there's more expected out of you. You have to do more to make it impressive.

i don't know. my "art" was called art by people, and it was easy as all hell. i personally agree, as i was only impressed with my "work" when i actually altered stuff, but i guess the whole discussion is pointless as it's way too subjective to define.

Exactly. I'm just trying to get across the point that it doesn't have to be "made from scratch by hand" to be art.

That said, I never considered my garbage to be art, but other people said it was. I didn't feel like arguing.

Rosh,

I don't have time to explain it to your dumb ass. Do you create collages and take photographs with 3d rendering software? Let's start here.

It takes approximately the same amount of skill for collages/photographs as 3d images. It is an art -- and like all forms of art, there is the crappy stuff and there are masterpieces.

And I don't feel like discussing the whole "what is art" thing, because I've been through it way too many times.

I think there is just a large difference between simply throwing together pictures other people have created, and putting those same pictures together in an organized thought out way that expresses something to you. Of course this difference is often found only in the person's head, sometimes it is hard to see with your own eye.

Likewise, Firedrops, there is a large difference between beginners' and experienced artists' 3d images. Or any art medium, for that matter.

What is art?
whenever people call it art, it's art.

Who are artists? People who call themselves artists are artists.

No shit, you people act like there are rules! THERE ARE NO RULES! Truly, it is what it is and if people like it, Yay. If people pay money for it, even better.

Being an artist is about holding yourself to certan standards when creating something... it's never about it being 'ok' or 'fine'. You work on a thing untill it is EXACTLY the way you wanted it to look. If you can't get it to that point, then work harder at getting better. Neeeeh!

and if you wanna be a working artist instead of a hobbyist... well you just have to be fukin insane

BTW Miz Fat, I dig what you're up to. I think in that you weren't really wanting to focus on the negative aspects of the city... because I really don't see any asside from the water being brown instead of blue.

Ever think of advertising design or illustration?
think about looking into companies like Hallmark... I think that'll jive with you.

:spin:

I really can't picture Catfat's art being used on many Hallmark cards. Perhaps some other card company that is more into unique arsty cards, but Hallmark seems to be mostly cheese and crap. Whenever I try to find cards for birthdays and such I find that I can never find anything in the Hallmark section. It's either too cheesy, too stupid or too religious. I just want something simple and attractive, not something loaded down with bad poetry and bad artwork.
I mean no offense to you PMG, but I think Catfat will take offense to what you said when she reads it.
