Auntie bunkum becomes Auntie Mame...

in fewer than 8 months. My 20 year old sister just announced to me that she's marrying the father of her unborn child; she's known this guy since June. I gave her the straight dope, wished her well, and told her I would be an insane aunt. But hell, I'm still worried about her. I knew she'd have a kid by the age of 23, but I didn't expect it would be this soon, or in what appears to be a silly manner. She just started work at The Gap a few weeks ago; the man she's marrying lays carpet for a living. I hope to guh they can pull it together.

Oh, the weird thing...about 4 hours before she called me, I dreamt that she was pregnant. I had better not get sympathy pains from this shit.

Any advice or books you can recommend is fine with me; whether she'll listen or move glibly through the world she's created for herself remains to be seen. She's under the impression that her new employers will pay for her entire hospital stay, her prenatal, and any birth complications--they won't. My father has just gone off the deep end, and my mother can't even speak anymore.

On a bright note, they are adamant against my marrying any time soon (i.e. no more marriage pressures for a while).If there is such a thing as a silver lining...

I'm an eccentric aunt. It's great fun! Three nieces and a nephew. They're beginning to get old enough to be, um, influenced.

Even when they're very young, you can buy wonderful present & stuff. Stuff that makes a mess, stuff that makes obnoxious noises...

I just had two of them visit with my sister. I introduced them to water balloons.

Too bad about the abrupt marriage, but at least they care enough to get married. You never know, it might be great.

Your sister is old enough to make her own decisions - even if sometimes they may seem wrong at the time. All you can do is support her and be a friend to her when she gets those swollen ankles, heartburn, backache, moodswings, high blood pressure/low blood pressure, morning sickness..

hmm.. i wonder how many people i just put off having kids for a while
