This is my friend Debbie. She's got more piss and vinegar than almost anyone I know, and she's not afraid to tell me the truth. I used to run around with her son gettin into trouble, and she'd look at me and say, "Yer pinin for that boy, ain't ya?" She was more interested in whether I lived or died than whether she hurt my pride or not. Folks like that are rare.

This is her son Joey. I stopped by his trailer to have a look at the cocks he's takin to the Derby at Texoma. We go way back, but we've both settled down quite a bit. I moved off and he had two kids. His mom emancipated him when he was 16 cuz he was an asshole. I don't blame her, but I still sent him money and magazines when he was locked up. He's doin pretty good now and has a steady job at a paint store in Ft Worth. It was good to see him, but I wouldn't wanna hook up with him again. We have different lives now.

Back at the farm, the front yard is shapin up. There's a lot of work yet to be done, but I've started on the mowin. Trimmed a lot of trees today as well. This is the front yard. It'll look a lot better before I take off on Thursday.

My friend Eddie dropped by for coffee and pie, and he got up on the roof for me and sawed some limbs that were hangin over the house. He's one of those people who look you in the eye when they talk to you. He's one of my best friends in the world. He shoes horses for a livin, and he's been sober about 20 years. He used to let his horse come in the house in the old days. Now he's one of the most respected people in this town, and values me more than I do myself at times. He's a very simple guy with a keen mind.

I'm sorry bout that, J. I lived in Irving for years and years, so I kinda know how ya feel. It's like Garland west.
