Brave New World: Reading Schedule

Hiya Kids,

Finally got around to it. The version I have is the 1946 second edition, first printing, which contains a foreward that I don't believe the first edition has. If you don't have that forward, do not despair. It's not part of the schedule, though people may still talk about it.

July 22-28 Chapters 1-4
July 29-Aug 4 Chapters 5-8
Aug 5-11 Chapters 9-11
Aug 12-18 Chapters 12-15
Aug 19-25 Chapters 16-18

I don't know where on the asylum we'll be hosting the discussion just yet, but just wanted to get this out so that people knew well in advance what was being read and such. I'll get some book links up as well...searching for a fast-loading e-text at the moment. If you're a wealthy sort who likes first editions, there are a number of them on alibris.com. Caveat Emptor...the descriptions of the books are quite vague.

If you want to buy your book from amazon and help contribute to software upgrades for the asylum with an affiliate program, then wait just a few more days. I'll have some links up, and give you the address.

Cool Cool Cool! Finally something I live and breathe for. I've read the book through several times already and loved it even more each time I did.

Beleieve it or not but I have the exact same edition of the book as you, 2nd ed. 1st printing. How wierd is that?


The next book done should definatly be Future Shock by Alvin Toffler. Despite being written in the early seventies, the man was dead on the mark about whats happening now.

I think Future Shock only applies to whichever generation is reading it. They always think the world is moving too quickly. But then the next generation is lightyears ahead of them before it too gets left in the dust. I really think it's just a sped up version of the old generation gap. Yer just gettin old and think it's a new trend.

Update:

Just wrote up a page that will provide the amazon link, a link to an etext, and a wee bit of context to interest or annoy you. I didn't go overboard by any means, ,since I really don't know much about huxley at all.

When dearest Dingle gets pages rearranged, we can apply for the amazon affiliate program. I want to see that done by this weekend so that kind folks like logan who want to help support the site aren't left stranded.

It looks like, for now, we'll be linking the book read forum within the sensory forum. It will be more heavily moderated than TLF obviously. We're still working out the details there. Please don't hate the moderation...it's to keep the discussion focused on the books and related topics, not to silence any alternative or unpopular opinions (unless they're obviously being put out there for stupidity...e.g. "Huxley was obviously a fag." or something along those lines).

Sound kosher, folks?

I haven't read this in years.

I'll pick up a copy this weekend.

And, I'm not sure if you folks have a suggestion bin or anything. But please put "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy on the list.

I'm just about done with it now and it's one of the best books I've ever read. Certainly one of the most violent. It'd be interesting to discuss.

Anyway, even if it doesn't end up getting read I'd recommend it to all of you. You'll finish it in two days and need to vomit when you're through (that was what the pretty young girl at the local bookstore said, anyway).
