Lightbulb BOOK #1: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley has been added to the reading schedule.

Hiya Kids,

Finally got around to it. The version I have is the 1946 second edition, first printing, which contains a foreward that I don't believe the first edition has. If you don't have that forward, do not despair. It's not part of the schedule, though people may still talk about it.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Born in Surray, England in 1894, he died in Los Angelas, California in 1963. BNW was originally written in 1932, and later revised in 1946 with a forward written to explain his literary choices.

Thanks to Stephanie Iser's website http://members.tripod.com/~siser/index2.html for providing the following information. Some of these events, occurring in 1932, may help provide context. Keep in mind that he started writing the book well before 1932, but may have included some of these events in the first edition, or modified the second edition to reflect what had happened. I cannot be certain, given that I have yet to read the first edition, or to explore his literary career with anything approaching depth.

* January: Five U.S. cities hit by bombing attacks linked to anti-fascists.
* March:Four killed, 100 wounded in riot at Ford plant as police fire on crowd. (Detroit)
* May:Amelia Earhart is the first woman to solo across Atlantic, flying Newfoundland to Ireland on Lindbergh day in record time of 15 hours.
* June 14:7,000 veterans march in Washington, demanding bonuses.
* July:10,000 die in a battle as Chiang opens campaign against communists (China)
* July 8: Summer Olympics open in LA.V
* August 24: Nazi newspaper banned for inciting riots. (Berlin)
* September 12: Five Nazis convicted of killing a communist get death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
* October:1,200 striking miners jailed for one day. (Illinois)
* November: Hurricane kills 1,000. (Cuba)
* December 26: 70,000 killed in massive earthquake
