My past experience as a kegger enthusiast goes along with the suggestion of buying a keg of cheaper beer & a case of good stuff for yourself. Plain old Bud will do just fine for the keg.
People at keg parties are not there to sample beer like a wine taster would. They are there to catch a buzz and socialize. When you are busy talking to some chick or bullshitting with the boys, playing air guitar and nodding your head in time with the beat, or the other thousand obnoxious things you do while partying, you are not paying attention to and appreciating the finer tastes of the brew you are swilling. Don't go out and buy the cheapest skunk piss that you can find - your guests WILL notice an inferior product, and that certainly will not enhance your reputation as a host, and probably will cause a lot of guests to leave early, and it is hard to get people enthused about your party if they are busy wretching with every swallow they take.
Actually, if it can be afforded, buying several pony kegs of different middle grade beers, instead of a couple of horse kegs of the same brand, to give a variety of tastes will definitely make an impression on your guests, but if you do not care to make such an impression, just stick with the Bud. Avoid light beers like the plague for they all taste like watery piss.
What you buy for yourself and the select chosen is really up to you. Personally my tastes lean to imported brews, mostly either German or Canadian lagers. Ales can be good also, but to me there are very few ales worth drinking. While I have been known to have a Bud or a Miller Light (when I'm at my Dad's house - I don't know how he can stand that crap!) once in a while, when it comes to pleasing my palate, I keep in mind the old joke about why American beer and Jonah in the belly of the whale are alike - they're both fucking close to water. I also reccomend checking out some microbrews for your private stash. There are some very fine micros out there worth drinking.
