Thumbs up Linux and me.

So far, we're getting along just fine. Using her right now. Hoorah.

I started seeing LinuxPPC about this time last year and it was a disaster from day one. That baby should've been aborted. I thought it was all my fault, but it turns out everyone trying to install it on that system had no luck getting any use out of it. I could get it to boot, and even got the window manager to run, but it was unstable and had some real problems with the display. After wasting, and I mean completely wasting, a month's worth of weekends (I even spent one weekend sober just to try to get it to work), I gave up on it and used the install CDs as coasters.

I know that Suse for PPC is out, but so is OS X beta, so if I start feeling all linux-y again any time soon, I may give it another try with more viable software. Plus now I have a linux person sleeping on my couch most of the time, so I wouldn't be as intimidated by it all. My previous unix experience is sort of limited, but I can learn.

I'm running Zipslack which is distributed by Slackware. Zipslack runs on a FAT partition, so there isn't that mess of re-partitioning.

Well, it's easier for me since I don't have a hard drive to monkey with.

hahaha.. (ext2 is better)

run mandrake 6 (dont get 7, there are ALOT of reasons, Im just not going to explain), and install enlitenement package, (use GNOME not KDE) and you will see what I mean when you install enlightenment. ANd I highly suggest reading the enlightenment help file so you know how to use.

Yes, its called LILO (linux loader) and setup will prompt you for it. You will still have to erase the data on your other partition, UNLESS, you have used Partition Magic first to cut your FAT partition down.

so what wrong with Mandrake 7? I run 7.1 and Suse 7. I don't use Gnome or Enlighhtenment coz there memory footprint is far too big. Blackbox for me, check out my screenshots in the image forum.

1) Mandrake 7 was put out too early. Sendmail still has problems collaberating with it, as well as the NUMEROUS security holes in it. There are so many, im not even going to start. Mandrake 6 is the shit. There are hardly any holes, that you can easily fix. Even with 7, ipchains is screwy.

2) You can write a PERL script to allocate memory: (not hard @ all):

#!/usr/bin/perl
print "Allocating $ARGV[0] bytes of memory \n";
$big = "";
for( $i=0; $i

by the way I was'nt saying it had a memory footprint problem, I was saying that enlightenment and gnome both have a bigger footprint than the likes of blackbox and Icevwm. And given that Linux is about choice i choose to have a manager that is slick, lean and fucking fast.

err yes I have, but I have the daemon turned off, it does not run on start up, and I have everything commented out in inetd.conf, coz I don;t run a telnet server, ftp server, pop3 server etc.

fair enuff, I just find gnome and enlightenment big and clunky for my liking, but then the desktop manager argument is one that always is there

It doesnt matter. All obsolete. inetd still runs a few services needed to hold a connection to the internet, but no big deal.

...actually, if youd like to get technical, it REFERS to things that are needed to hold a connection.
