Thumbs up a different type of book club

from www.bookcrossing.com

The "3 Rs" of BookCrossing...

Read a good book

Register it here (along with your journal comments), get a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID number), and label the book

Release it for someone else to read (give it to a friend, leave it on a park bench, donate it to charity, "forget" it in a coffee shop, etc.), and get notified by email each time someone comes here and records journal entries for that book. And if you make Release Notes on the book, others can Go Hunting for it and try to find it!

Sounds easy, right? Well it is. It's also a fascinating exercise in fate, karma, or whatever you want to call the chain of events that can occur between two or more lives and one piece of literature. Oh, and we should mention, it's absolutely free and absolutely private, too.

So go grab a book or two from your shelves now (they're not doing anyone any good there, are they?), register them here, jot down our URL and the BCID we'll give you inside the covers, and then give them away or leave them where someone will find them.

------------------------

i registered and am going to be releasing a book this week. i think it's a great idea.

This sounds like a keen idea. I'd do it if I was in a good college town instead of a land where no one reads my language.

I've been pretty bored the last few weeks and I've been doing almost nothing but reading, so I have some books that I could set free. If you want any of them come to Trondheim, Norway and look around for a while. I'll try to set them free in book-friendly environments.

i actually asked a mod to move it out of book club and into general sensory overload where it can get more exposure, beyond the folks that are just participating in the group reads.

so which one is it guys?

move it or leave it here?

make up my mind, damn you!

on a side note, this would be a fantastic idea except for one small flaw...you should put both URL's in the book: the one for bookcrossing, and the one for the asylum. that way we can possibly get some new membership out of the deal.

i'm going to check this thread in half an hour. the most votes decides where the thread stays, k? do you think that this should be in the book forum because it relates to books, or do you think it should (at least for a few days) hang out in sensory overload for more exposure?

*insert dramatic music here*

I say let it stay in sensory for a few days, then move it. It'll get exposure here, then be in a place with less traffic so that it'll be seen longer.

I think it should stay here. the book club forum doesn:t seem such a bumping place, and it should stay just for "official" book club discussion (of which there was so much i quit trying to keep up with it. :rolleyes

I was in favour having a books subforum, so that books stuff doesn't get swamped with threads about tool and Hollywood movies.

But really, there has to be some sort of official decision, I think.

the asylum bookclub FAQ:

This forum is strictly for the purpose of discussing
the following:

-current or past Asylum group read books
-suggestions for new books
-discussion about any new books that have been called
to your attention
-discussion and or tech support for the Amazon
Affiliate program, or any related concerns about
the specific group read site (link here).

----------------

so basically, any kind of book suggestions or discussions would technically go there. i think right now though people are still getting used to having a different forum for said discussion. plus, it isn't really getting any use, and that's all of our faults. we all read- let's post about it there, ok?

anyway...i still think this is an interesting idea, and i hope you all take my suggestion and add the asylum URL to your books. keep us updated on your book's travels as well, if you can.

Reading the FAQ, I'd say this thread doesn't belong there.
Are you going to move all the threads related to books or reading?
I don't really care, except that it reminds me of when the art forum started.

By the way, the U.S. scifi channel is airing the tv movie version of Brave New World (starring Leonard Nimoy) this Saturday. It sounds horrible, which means I'll probably watch it and can't recommend it to anyone.

yeah, really this isn't so much about books as it is the activity of releasing the objects....it could be anything, and for that matter it could go into TLF, but I wanted it here so it would stay on top a bit longer.

oh, and the title "sensory overload" was my idea too.

i have a good one every once in awhile.
