Travels With 'Lizbeth by Lars Eigner

Lars Eigner was a super tramp. He says so in his book. He is "professionally homeless and unemployed" as is his dog 'Lizbeth. Lars is gay and occasionally writes an article or story for a Gay and Lesbian magazine but not often. His pay for such articles is usually $25. Lars has developed four rules to govern his life. They are:

He will not work for wages

He will not beg or panhandle

He will not steal

He will not do anything which would threaten separation
from 'Lizbeth like he avoids jails and hospitals.

Lars lives in Austin, Texas. At the time he was writing this book he lived in a camp in the center of a bamboo thicket in Shoal Creek Park in Austin. Before he had 'Lizbeth he posed as a mental case and lived at the State Hospital for the Mentally Handicapped posing sometimes as a psychiatrist and sometimes as a patient. A large section of his book is devoted to "dumpster
diving" or "How to live like a gourmet from dumpsters" in perfect health and safety.

He travels to Los Angeles occasionally--hitchhiking with 'Lizbeth on a leash.

It is a fun book and I think that all of you will be amazed that a person like Lars Eigner lives in the world today. The amazing thing is that Lars lives this life not because he has to but because he wants to. Published by Fawcett Columbine in 1993 a 271 pp
trade paperback.

I bought the book a few weeks ago, and just finished it earlier this evening before I took a nap.

I have to back up oxsan's recommendation. Not only does it give you a different perspective on homelessness--especially voluntary--but it helps you see that there are folks in every group worthy of respect, worthy of listening to and learning from.

It's damned good entertainment as well...the last few chapters especially had me chuckling.
