The only OS on that list that I've used was BeOS and I didn't have a fun time with it. Extremely limited hardware support (Network card? What's that? USB keyboard? Huh?). I did like the look and feel of the OS, though. It might have had promise at one point.

NeXTSTEP. It's philosophy of using multiple general purpose CPU's to do *everything* was an incredibly cool idea.

What is apple's operating system called (forbidden knowledge to a mere Church of the saviours Gates and Gore acolyte like myself)?

The Gates steamroller, powered by Gore's fire, will crush Apple like the roach colony that they are!

yeah Next.

Isn't BeOS still around, or did Gasse get eaten, or feck now I have to look it up (they sold out to Palm or what?...never mind I do NOT want to know).

Wait. I change my mind. I vote Multics. YAY.

Except I didn't really vote because I am cretaceous.

Be sold all their intellectual property to Palm. I found a BeOS trial install-thing on download.com one time, and Kuggles has a BeOS R5 (I think) install (he was supposed to send me a copy, that bastid).

There is a project underway called OpenBeOS which is going to try and resurrect Be. They are basing their kernel off of NextOS which is being written by a former Be engineer.

If you want a CD (burned) of BeOS R5 Pro, let me know. The personal edition crap was just that, crap.

You know, I was tempted. But Plan9, which I think took the core ideas of Multics and implemented it somewhat more elegantly, has a way cuter mascot. Who can resist a mutant bunny like creature? Not me!

But Plan9 was automatically scratched simply because it is possibly the most pain in the butt OS to develop on if you don't have a traditional CS degree.

Please tell me it's just a coincidence this OS shares its name with an Ed Wood movie.

Oick your favourite non-MS OS (I know it seems like a logical nonsense, but try), so that I can relay the information to the bosses and they can set out to destroy it.

You knew that it had to be.

"The Plan 9 operating system, named for the science-fiction cult movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space," was designed by the inventors of the UNIX® system, a widely used operating system created at Bell Labs 25 years ago."

NeXT was supposed to evolve into OS X (back when they were calling it Rhapsody) before they went with the NetBSD-based Darwin. I guess things got behind schedule (like, what, four years behind schedule?) so they made the switch.

The OS X Finder is supposedly a ton like NeXT. but i really wouldn't know.

and OS/2 is used by a lot of diebold ATMs. I saw one crash and watched it go through the whole OS/2 boot process.

NeXT's biggest weakness was using Objective C as it's primary developement language. Some people seem to be able to cope with doing OO in C, but it leaves the vast majority of programmers in a cold sweat.

It's, AFAIK, 90% based on NeXT's graphical core. So it's still largely a O-C developement enviroment. Don't quote me on this though, as my knowledge of things MacOS is somewhat lacking.
