Help, I'm a retard
I'm stating the obvious, I know, anyways here's the problem.
MY COMPUTER WON'T START UP!!
It happened a few weeks ago when Illussion was here, and it happened again tonight. I went to reboot and the damn thing wouldn't start back up. I can hear the fan going when I press the power button, but that's it. Last time we waited three hours and it started back - finally. I'm hoping that'll happen again tonight..
..but do any of you intelligent folk have any ideas as to what might be causing it to do this? It's a pretty new computer, was purchased in October of this year, and I'm running XP and no viruses as of last week.
Any help would be very much appreciated, as I said before, I am a retard when it comes to this sort of thing. It's a miracle I can even find the power button.

Yeah.
It is working again now. Just like before, after I let it be for a few hours it started working again.
I'm still curious if anyone has any idea what's causing that to happen though.

You need to be more specific....
When it starts up does it show any errors at all?
And when you wait WTF is your comp doing? Only the ven spins? Or your computer starts running bios?

Sounds like a bad power supply to me.

Sounds like your fan is dead and your chips are just overheating and giving out. I had this happen and didn't realise it until my pc was too messed up to fix. Try the power supply first, might just be too much power in one place, too little in others.

Yeah, sounds like a bad hardware problem, perhaps some loose connections. You might want to have a techie look at it, preferably when it isn't working so they can see the problem. I bet they can jiggle some wires and all will be better.

I agree with this man. Since yours is a HP then its going to be a problem since they dont use standard ATX powersupplys. You may run into some money here with the HP proprietary parts. Anyway, take it to a shop and have them pull it apart and test a newer psu on it.
If, like some suggest, the heatsinks fan isnt spinning and the proc is overheating then it wouldnt start up after its been idling hot for three hours.

This has happened again! Help!
(I will read all replies for her and let her know what you all suggest, since she can't get her computer to start.)

Did she take it to the shop and have it looked at or did she just let it slide? If she just let it slide then all she can do is what was said three months ago. If she didn't let it slide and got her computer fixed then it's probably time to buy a new box and throw that piece of shit out. It'll probably be a reoccuring problem.

Yeah, she didn't fix it in the meantime... Unfortunately it's a fairly new computer without the luxury of throwing it out and replacing it. She's going to have her dad take it to his office and have the tech guy there look at it for her.

If it's still under warranty she can get it fixed for free because it's a defective product. And every computer, new or old, has the luxury of being thrown out. My first computer was thrown out after two days of ownership after I ruined it.

Yes, but not everyone has the luxury of buying a new one. I'll point out the warranty idea to her.

After we sent that one back to the shop, and they couldn't fix it, we got our money back and I didn't own a computer again for nearly five years.
And point out the warranty, yo!
