How come when I type "arsenal.com" in the address bar of my browser I get a "The specified server cannot be found", but when I type "www.arsenal.com", I'm in ?

It is only for certain URL's, normally the "www" is automatically assumed.

The www is never assumed. It is all in the dns records. If you have a server and you want people to be directed to it when they request www.splatkicksass.com or if they request splatkicksass.com, you set up your dns records so that either of those requests returns the same address.

That would be ftp://www.splatkicksass.com as opposed to http://www.splatkicksass.com or not?

Is it not whoever issued you your domain name being lazy? The domain name server or whatever?

It is likely that whoever administers the dns set it up in accordance with what the customer requested. If there is a problem with the current configuration, it was most likely caused by the customer's lack of understanding of how dns works. It would probably take less than a minute on the phone to have the records set up so that people will reach the same server with or without www in the address.

When you look at the address bar, the http: or ftp: are specifying the protocol and are not part of the address. http://whatever.com and ftp://whatever.com would be directed to the same address. www.whatever.com and ftp.whatever.com could go to different addresses or they could go to the same address depending on how the dns is configured.

I don't think an FTP address would have "www" in it. Then again, I don't regularly visit FTP servers, so maybe you've found some special one I haven't.

if you know it has .com at the end of the URL, you can just type arsenal in the browser and the hold down the "control" key when keying "enter/return".

Is that easy enough?

as splat pointed out, there is a dns record for "www.server.com" but not for "server.com". I read an article about this once, and thought i bookmarked it, but now i cant find it. if i remember correctly, there is a reason some webmasters do not add both records. it has to do with server load and efficiency on high traffic websites or something to that effect. the general consensus, though, is you do more harm than good by not having both records, as many people will give up before trying "www.server.com".
