Whenever I run XMMS it gives me an error about my sound device. The terminal spits out:

/dev/dsp: no such device

I know for a fact that /dev/dsp exists, and that there is also a /dev/dsp1. I tried switching to /dev/dsp1 and got the same results.

I had previously used chmod 666 /dev/dsp to allow all users to use the soundcard thinking maybe that would fix the problem. Still get the same error. I've compiled support for my soundcard into the kernel so it's not that there isn't a module for my card. It's just saying that my soundcard doesn't exist.

It was working a few days ago when I did an initial install.

What's the deal?

Oh, and it isn't just with XMMS. Sound doesn't work at all. Everything tells me it can't find either /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer (both of which exist).

/dev/dsp is an OSS device, so you shouldn't be using it unless the application only supports OSS sound drivers, or ALSA doesn't support your soundcard.

If you still want to use /dev/dsp, but you're using ALSA drivers, make sure the alsa-oss compatibility libraries are installed, and that they match your main ALSA library version.
