Help From The Limey's.

Once a person has inherited a British noble title or has been raised to the peerage can that person's title and nobility be nullified? Can the Queen break a Baron,or de-noble a Duke?
Has it ever been done? I know that knighthoods can be nullified.
Lord Cochran was dismissed from his title as a Companion of the Bath but he still remained an Earl. His arms and shield were removed from Westminster Abbey and then replaced when Victoria re-instated his knighthood. if you know ot an instance in British history when a peer was reduced to the ignobility let me know.

There is talk of removing Jeffrey (Lord) Archer's peerage, but he is an appointed peer (he is currently in jail, not for his execrable writings, but for perjury). I would have thought that the monarch could remove an honour of any level if she saw fit; I believe that Jonathan Aitken lost some honour (privy councillor?) after his own perjury conviction. I sort of guess that nobles had their titles through the grace of the monarch (although political and financial shenanigans relating the award of titles were probably afoot since there was a monarchy).

I think that in the past they usually lost their heads concurrently with their titles. It would be interesting to see that whole bit played out again.

The title would probably pass to the heir, though, I would have thought, unless they monarch was really pissed off.

Smug, it would seem to me that cutting off a peer's head would be ample indication that the Monarch was REALLY pissed off. If slight irritation can bring on decapitation then I hesitate to describe what punishment might be meted out to those who REALLY trod on the royal toe.

Sometimes a monarch has to do what a monarch has to do.

Denobling an entire family, I would have thought, would have been a more severe act because it didn't support the distinction between nobility and the lower class types. If they could lose their titles, why, it is almost as if they are the same as the rest of us!

He abdicated his membership of the monarchy, I believe, but was still titled.

Even though Edward abdicated and was denied the throne both for himself and his descendants he was not cast from the peerage. He retained the title of "The Duke of Windsor" and his wife Wally Simpson was referred to in the newspapers at least as "The Duchess of Windsor". A Duke is pretty high nobility. He was also the Governor of the Bahamas during WWII years.
