Not In Our Name

Not In Our Name

quote:

The Pledge of Resistance
We believe that as people living
in the United States it is our
responsibility to resist the injustices
done by our government,
in our names

Not in our name
will you wage endless war
there can be no more deaths
no more transfusions
of blood for oil

Not in our name
will you invade countries
bomb civilians, kill more children
letting history take its course
over the graves of the nameless

Not in our name
will you erode the very freedoms
you have claimed to fight for

Not by our hands
will we supply weapons and funding
for the annihilation of families
on foreign soil

Not by our mouths
will we let fear silence us

Not by our hearts
will we allow whole peoples
or countries to be deemed evil

Not by our will
and Not in our name

We pledge resistance

We pledge alliance with those
who have come under attack
for voicing opposition to the war
or for their religion or ethnicity

We pledge to make common cause
with the people of the world
to bring about justice,
freedom and peace

Another world is possible
and we pledge to make it real.

Rally tomorrow in Central Park. And 100 other cities.

Why not recycle Jello Biafra's old one?

I pledge defiance to the flag of the United Snakes of Captivity

And to the Republic for which it stands, I dip it in kerosene, and stick it up the ass of you know who and light it

One nation, under God--or else

One nation, under psychopath Pentagon gangsters, whose idea of democracy is concentration camps for the people who go and use the drugs that the government supplies themselves

One nation, under Wall Street:

If the cops and the President are all criminals, I might as well be one too, ha ha!

One Nation of tabloid robots who actually believe what they see on tv, but when ask about it say “I don’t care.”

One nation, drowning in its own garbage

Indivisible from the from the fall of Rome

With liberty and justice for all who can afford it

Burn, Baby, Burn

Old Glory

The Yankee Swastika

Burn, Baby, Burn

Burn, Baby, Burn

Whenever I see you I see red

Whenever I see you I see red

If the Communists can do it, why can’t we

Throw the bastards out and try some real Democracy

Not by rich people

Not by Army people

Not by sons of senators sons of senators sons of senators sons

After all, have you noticed

The more they dole out Democracy over there

The more they take it away over here

Now, before it’s too late

Be a good boyscout

Take the Swastika

The Yankee Swastika

and let it

Burn

Burn

Burn, baby Burn

I think that there is an anti-war rally in Princeton tomorrow; it will probably break up early when they all head off to the library to get their homework done.

Joys of democracy.

I call bullshit.

Yeah, it's all great to be active and up in arms over abuses of our government...but then when it comes down to it, the people who advocate that sort of thing today are only concerned with legalizing drugs, or in actuality being worse bigots and oppressors than we had before. I noticed Tak's little poem mentioned "religious oppression." Now, is that just for, say, Muslims and other minorities in America, or are we also talking justice for the Catholics and other people whose opinions and views are constantly excluded specifically because of their religious beliefs?

America is tolerant, so long as you step into line. . .you people "tolerate everything but intolerance" and then define everything that goes against your beliefs as "intolerant." It's a load of horseshit, really, it is.

I haven't felt oppressed here (yet) as a catholic. What freedoms to practice at least the personal sections of catholicism do I lack (that is to say, the bits that don't involve trying to lean on government like the church in Ireland has obnoxiously done) in the US?

If it relates to general 'christian' stuff like the 'under God' part of the pledge of allegience (hardly as obnoxious to me as the recitation of the pledge at all, with or without God reference) then I don't think that comes down to religious opression as there is no requirement in the religion to do that; we are all aware of the restrictions of personal expression in certain areas (nudity restrictions, libel and fraud laws, etc) in any case.

France is very secular but even the Lefervrans don't feel seriously oppressed by the government, as far as I am aware (they are more down on the pope, at any rate, hardly surprising) and they are pretty serious as far as 'catholics' go (not really catholics, I think that they may all be excommunicate, although their pristhood is valid through the validity of their bishopric, although not licit).

I felt oppressed as a non-Protestant in the South. It was started by 9/11 victims' families one year ago today, when we started bombing Afghanistan in revenge.

I've felt oppressed for years. It started somewhere around the second year of marriage.

(Just kidding, hon!)

Just to let you know, I really like you, personally Tak.

Now, this lil poem of yours and it's following, well.....

It's kinda like MIND CHEETOS: looks like food, but when you crunch, all you get is orange scum on your teeth.

I'm from the Bay Area. When I want to feel trendy, I oppress myself. Just the other day I denied myself a job, and protested by refusing to take out the garbage.

What I can't handle is the harrassment, though. It just annoys me to no end when I call myself festerous things like "stud" and "hairy vixen," and whistle at myself as I walk by. This has got to stop.

All these people are saying, in essence, is the same that many people whose side didn't win the last election (whichever that was) feel. Republicans felt that they weren't being fairly represented to the rest of the world when the Great Philanderer Clinton was in power (Emerald and I were discussing this in chat the other day). If you are against the war strongly, you would feel really extremely unrepresented by the government, no great surprise there (by both republicans and a fair number of democrats, both in the White House and in Congress).

Are these people just supposed to put up and shut up? Because I wouldn't, if they were in power.

EDIT: Attempted to make sense of it.

Youre a funny bastard...have some points

By all means let them scream and claw out their own eyes for what ever cause real or otherwise they see fit...what bothers me however is the lack of credibility and mourn the loss of substance in a lot of "protests". Usually its a bunch of smiling laughing kids and ex hippies just having a hoot of a time showing up at any protest being held for what ever reason...and if there is no reason its fairly easy to fabricate one. Let go through this touching poem so I can point out my point. It would be nice to hear someone is protesting and let it be an alarm or a heads up that someone has something substantial to say...of course anti war is substantial...but when the argument is filled with mistruth, half hearted arguments and twisted fact it is a tragedy imo.

quote:
The Pledge of Resistance
We believe that as people living
in the United States it is our
responsibility to resist the injustices
done by our government,
in our names

Fantastic! I wholly encourage this....

quote:
Not in our name
will you wage endless war
there can be no more deaths
no more transfusions
of blood for oil

bullshit, its not about oil...oil just happens to be the element empowering a tyrant. Cutting off the resources of an enemy is a very old war practice. We will get oil reguardless and I am sure everyone knows Bush’s efforts to not be so dependant on foreign oil…and he has been criticized for it…but now all of a sudden he is all about middle eastern oil out of greed right? Willing to murder a bunch of people for no other reason but oil…because anyone can tell by his personality that he is an evil murdering bastard right? How do we know this? Cause he gives shitty speeches I guess….

quote:
Not in our name
will you invade countries
bomb civilians, kill more children
letting history take its course
over the graves of the nameless

Which children are we killing? Are we bombing civilians? Or are we waging war against an enemy in which innocents are caught in crossfire? They try to make it sound like we are purposely bombing kids and grannies...that’s usually a tactic used by the enemy we target.

quote:
Not in our name
will you erode the very freedoms
you have claimed to fight for

wtf? what? This is a subject that draws out a lot of emotion from those unwilling to put effort into informing themselves with clean fact or use the mental energies it would require to consider a society that is both open and wants to continue to exist.

quote:
Not by our hands
will we supply weapons and funding
for the annihilation of families
on foreign soil

Did the Iraqi people write this? Or Palestinian people? I think I’m lost....

quote:
Not by our mouths
will we let fear silence us

Me either...

quote:
Not by our hearts
will we allow whole peoples
or countries to be deemed evil

wow, I should hope not. Other than a few rare ignorants of that caliber in this country where has this happened? ..... Oh yeah...the middle east...who wrote this again?

quote:
Not by our will
and Not in our name

We pledge resistance

touching...

quote:
We pledge alliance with those
who have come under attack
for voicing opposition to the war
or for their religion or ethnicity

this piece of writing is oppressing me...I pledge I will make farty armpit noises till it stops.

quote:
We pledge to make common cause
with the people of the world
to bring about justice,
freedom and peace

Right on! So they are coming around...fantastic lets make some progress in the world...power in the hands of the people! *goes to make a sign/which is really hard to do one handed while making farty armpit noises*

quote:
Another world is possible
and we pledge to make it real.

I agree...REVOLUTION BABY!!! It’s ugly but efficient.

From the website:
****************
Georgia - Atlanta
Sunday, October 6, 5:30pm
Buckhead Park (intersection of Roswell Rd and Peachtree).
Join fellow anti-war people in taking the Pledge of Resistance, and participate in Dances for Universal Peace.
*****************

Do you know how much money we could save on military spending and how many lives could be saved just by installing peace dance floors?

They forgot to mention the other events, such as tie-dye sales, pot smoking, birkenstock repair, and generally standing around trying to be more oppressed than one another before hitting the mellow mushroom pizza place and complaining that there might be peanut traces in something.

I'm all for valid dissent. But when a bunch of these typical folks to go protest something, all everyone else can do is say "Wow, look at those filthy worthless hippies" And the message will never get across. Like the global economic conference protesters. They think we should relieve the debt on developing countries. Maybe we should cut some folks some slack, but dont be out there protesting the use of your tax dollars when you havent paid any for years, because you thought it would be better to spend your time in the state subsidised schools and sleeping on your weed dealers couch.
