The Morning After Pill

Ok this post is for the americans more than anything else. Its not a post about abortion though, it is more a question. Is the Morning After Pill well known in the US. I only ask because it got its license for sale in the State and I wondered how well known it was. It has been available in Europe now for about 15 years. basically its for a girl within 78 hours of unprotected sex.

I'm not too bothered about whether you agree or disaggree with its use coz I know the issue is a contentious one in the US, I just want to know whether it is well known about

I am an American. I am aware that a woman can get a prescription for a drug to give herself an abortion in America. She can get the prescription before she's had sex.

Yay, 72 hours. How is that an abortion?? Maybe someday we'll have a 72-day pill.

I've known about RU-486 since it was first reported here being released for use in France - don't know if that was 15 years ago but it seems like it.

Nope. The morning after pill and ru-486 are two completely different things.
The morning after pill prevents conception from happening by doing something funky (so much for sounling like i know what i'm talking about) to the walls of the fallopian tubes so that it just can't happen.
RU-486 terminates a pregnancy up to 7 weeks.

for what it's worth, and I could be going in a different direction, my g/f and I had an oops once and lost the condom (ug) so the next day we went to family planning to get a morning after pill. what she got was a double does three times a day for two days of regular birth control. that's right, six pills in two days was what the doc prescribed. before any of you girls try this at home though, make sure you double check with the doc. he prescribed a dose based on age, height/weight, and previous pill exposure .. so your dose might be completely different. oh ya, and he also said the treatment was about 65-70% effective (as an educated guess due to no real study being done) and that it should only be used infrequenty at most.

The morning after pill is called "Preven", it has been available for about 1.5 years here in the US, before then (as madbomber spoke of) doctors would double up on two different types of birth control (I won't mention which ones so noone medicates themselves) to prevent conception or the egg from attaching.

I don't believe "Preven" is very popular, in many years of working in a pharmacy we only filled it twice.

"Preven" is NOT RU486.

Did any of you hear about this Birth COntrol method the Chineese are going to start using?.... I do not know exactly how it works... all i know is that it sends an electrical pulse to the sperm so it will die.... Sounds nifty but i aint electricuting my dick.....

As previously mentioned, the "morning after" pill (large dose of birth-control) has been available here for awhile. RU486 was just approved here this past week. Interesting how a decent amount of anti-abortion people (no, I don't have stats) have complained about the "morning after" pill as being an abortive when it's the same thing as the birth cotrol pill (which most of them don't have a problem with). I can't wait to see what they'll do with RU486

the morning after "Pill" consists of:

6 nordiol tablets and 2 x 10mg maxolon tablets.

Take One Maxolon tablet every twelve hours for TWO doses as directed (half an hour before Nordiol tablet). Then, take two nordiol tablets every twelve hours for TWO doses as directed.

Maxolon is to reduce nausea - they also prescribe it for people suffering with gastro who are throwing up all over the place. Nordiol is plain old boring birth control - THE PILL. They supply you with six tablets, even tho you're only meant to take 4, just in case you bring up your second lot of tabs (which usually happens)

how do i know all this?
because i have taken the tablets before, and i still have the dosage instructions. It is not an "abortion in a pill" it stops conception from happening, there is no little organisms forming into a weeny baby. be warned tho, it is not 100% effective. It still states on the dosage instructions "You must STILL attend your local physician and take a pregnancy test, EVEN if you have your period."
