this is probably mostly aimed at the wraith, but does anyone else that "hitchhikes" on the information superhighway know how to spot wireless access points visually?

I bring this up because i was in a town a few weeks back (rexburg, ID) that was saturated with access points, most publicly accessible, but there was also a large commercial network (at least 20-odd access points) in town. I had no visual clues as to the location of the antennae. Now, part of my job is to identify communications hardware, but no one at work has been any help as far as wireless hardware/antennae goes.

i realized that google is a fantastic search tool, but YOU try a search for "wireless antenna" and see how much fun it is.

I have this mounted on the top of my car:



Which, is a 5dB gain omnidirectional antenna, unpowered. Increases my wireless range - with a nominal output of 15dBi at 100mW with my Compaq and Orinoco NICs and/or an output of 20dBi at 100mW with my Cisco Aironet NICs. Extends detection capabilities from a few hundred feet to nearly 2 miles.

I also utilize this GPS to capture data for triangulation:

i am sort of limited, antenna-wise, but sort of not. the wireless card has an antenna lead, to plug in to the laptop's built-in antenna (which runs around the perimeter of the screen), but the card itself is under the keyboard, so any modified antenna lead would pretty much have to stick out of the keyboard unless i wanted to take a drill to my ibook (hint: i don't).

i found macstumbler for OS X on one of the links in the other thread. a cool program that does a better job of updating the signal strength situation, plus it has tones whenever a new network is picked up (one tone for WEP enabled, a different tone for plain vanilla), plus it speaks the network name aloud so i can drive and all.

it's all radio. scanning for wireless networks should be governed by the same rules or laws as using a radio scanner, because that's what you're doing.

there may be people exploiting security holes, but i don't believe it's anything they couldn't exploit from a wired connection.
