Eh? So what? Every developed nation has its own film industry. The UK's is still shit. The BFI had about 45 releases last year, and 300 reels of film on shelves. Most British cinema is still shit. Fact.
Trainspotting - Fair enough. Decent cinema, unfortunately it's just sparked a series of poorly thought-out clones.
Nil By Mouth - Oh yes, gritty depressing-as-fuck 'Up Norff' drama. That's something we haven't seen before, is it?
Snatch (saw it Saturday fucking wicked) - saw it last week fucking clone of Richies earlier and more superior Lock Stock ... Yet another case of someone with only ONE good idea and dragging the fuck out of it for ages.
Scum - this film is so old it has a buss pass. In fact, the young psycho in this one is an middle aged psycho in Nil by Mouth. Are we surprised?
Go - sucked. Don't bring that shit near me
The Full Monty - sucked too. Was it funny? Was it original? Was it a badly written, amateurishly acted, travesty of modern cinema? No, and yes respectively.
And so on and so forth. My point here is that no matter how many 'decent' british films you throw at me, I could throw as many crap ones back at you. Yes, you say, but so could we with hollywood. Well, then my point is that you should take a look at all of these 'British' films and tell me which ones are not highly influenced by Hollywood. Answer = very little. Perhaps Trainspotting deserves to be in a class of its own, but precious little else.

What fucking planet are you on? Cannes is recognisibly as much self-congratulatory shit as The Academy Awards are, and you fucking well know it. Every year it gets worse and worse. More and more wannabes trailing their shit about in the hopes of making it. Cannes is so damnably superficial that it's seen now as another fashion show, another two week photo shoot. It's not a 'film festival' any more. The fact that there are some films showing at the same time is purely coincidental to the real purpose of that sham these days.
So, Mr. British Bulldog, you may take that defensive crap and smoke it. Practially everything about England is a USA clone today. The USA of months / years ago, that is. Your television, your clothes, your language, your shopping malls, your politics, yada yada yada. The list goes on.
Refute it all you like, you are all becoming the 51st state, and what's worse is, most of you are working to make it happen.
Now, should I go and edit this post twice to show how authorative I am?
