Exclamation Win 95 status

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycleconsumer.mspx

It will no longer be illegal to trade win95 software and serials after Dec 31, will the trade of such software be met with the same consequences as TEFL's previous thread after this time-span?

The "consequences" of TEFL's thread should be no surprise to anyone here. We don't prevent people from legally trading software.

I apologize, my fuckup. I didn't mean for the thread to go south like that. I am just desperate to get that box running before Christmas. It's going to be a gift for my 5 year old niece so she won't be monkeying with my other two all the time. (Seriously)

Was the second warning mention directed at me? If so, when was my first infraction?

in reference to the question asked at the beginning of the other thread: ok, maybe this is totally impractical, but would it not be possible to yank the hd from the machine you want win95 on, put it into a machine with a cd drive, install win95 from cd, yank the drive again and re-install it in the machine you want it on, then redo some of the configuration stuff so as to match the hardware available to it?

That's way more work than it's worth.

My advice is to stay well away from loading a HD on a dissimilar MoBo than the one you want to use the HD in, all the firmware for the controllers will be loaded for the other machine, when you move the HD (especially with 95) you will find it trying to reinstall the controllers, some of which will only install with the old MoBo controller disks, try finding one for an old board nowadays.

FuhQ, you'll have to quote the part from that link that says MS is relinquishing control over Win95. I skimmed the four page article, and the gist of it that i got was simply that MS was going to stop supporting 95. The license of the old OS should remain in effect.

I've thought about that. Which make and model would work best in something that old?

I'd say Slackware. When I first started posting at the Asylum and SPF I had a junker box with a 300 mHZ proc. and a little bit of RAM (32, I think) and it ran Slackware Linux like fairly well.

In all honesty I wouldn't suggest giving a kid a Linux box unless you plan on spending your waking hours re-teaching the kid how to use a computer.

If you're running the computer on a home network, then install Debian. Apt get makes obtaining, and installing packages so easy.

I have read it a bit bit further and you are absolutely correct, the support falls away and the liscence remains, just like MS to charge you for using an abacus.

I imagine that the ability for a company to pursue infrigements of an 'osolete' OS in court might be impaired. But they wouldn't surrender legal ownership of it.

I guess that their exclusive ownership will expire eventually, but not yet.
