Two completely unrelated topics, but i want to kill two birds with one stone.

First off- the cat.

I got to dissect a cat in my Zoology class this week. My teacher started class off on Thursday telling us that she had found a cat speciman in the storage closet, and wanted to know if anyone wanted to dissect it. I definately didnt want to dissect a THIRD shark (that was the original dissection we were to do), so i opted for the cat- so did two other girl-friends of mine. Yesterday we did the main internal organs- heart, liver, lungs, etc.- today we did the cool stuff- the brains, eyeball and muscle/skeletal stuff. It took me about 20 minutes to cut through the skull with a bone saw- after i removed the brain we decided to hunt for a jar to put it in. We brought the brain with, thinking we were going to be making a short trip across the hall- we ended up wandering the hall for twenty minutes, me with the cat brain in my hand. It was pretty funny seeing the reactions of people studpid enough to ask what i was carrying. Anyway- i found it quite fun.

I loved dissecting a cat in high school. That actually took up half a semester in one of my biology classes, but we did a pretty thorough study of the anatomy. Very fun.

Also fun was seeing the reactions of people who walked by the room, or the person from the school paper who came in to take pictures and got grossed out.

Man, I feel like I got gyped. I left my HS before we got to do fetal pigs, so all I got was salmon (if I remember correctly) and a frog. I think there were about four or five people who actually wanted to do the dissections, and at least one who refused. Nothing like an all-girls school to produce a bunch of squealing squeemish chicks.

I remember making a lot of slides to see how the different tissues looked. I think I was the only one who was that into it. I also think that is what initiated my interest in becoming a pathologist. Well, that and watching an autopsy from less than a foot away from the body.
