I don't like this kind of thing and all the reasons have been stated before.

However, would people object as strongly to bringing back beat cops who just wander around the city looking for trouble? There is something to be said for the adage, "If you're not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about."

The main concern being that if you give certain people enough power, then they will redefine what is wrong...redefine what is meant by "the Common Good," and then will have the muscle to enforce their vision...usurpation is a more important issue than surveillance, I'd think.

Very interesting (read your pms squee!!!!) read Joey. Some of it (read your pms squee!!!!!) is sort of creepy. I think that it will (read your pms squee!!!!) run its course and then fade out though, or run its course and by merit build (read your pms squee!!!!) contempt if there are abuses. I agree 100% (and no I don't have a problem with beat cops at all; I think that's a grand idea myself).

Those that don't have a problem with this, you're comfortable with the notion that everything you do outside of the confines of your home will be filmed?

Beat cops are more expensive than some guy sitting in a closet watching monitors. And, I suppose the main reason this doesn't bother me all that much is 1) I'm very rarely in the city and B) I've got nothing to hide and 3) if something were to happen to me, there's a very good chance that it would be on tape.

I am, but I don't think that's material. I can even see the "concern" whether you're doing something wrong or not. Just doesn't bother me... fact is, everytime I leave my house, someone sees me everywhere I go. That it's on film is no big deal. Anyone could be walking around with a video camera and catch me scratching my crotch.

It's material when it comes to the level of comfort with the idea. And the question was "Does this bother you."

The idea repulses me on the invasion of privacy level, but I also hate being on film/camera. It makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable. My being on the cam portal is an attempt to get over that, and it isn't working very well. But time marches on.

My point would be: if you want privacy, stay home, and close your curtains. If there was an expectation of privacy in "public", they'd call it something else.

Exactly. I can't help but feel that much of the negative impulse against it may very well be due, at least in part, to preconceived general notions against it brought about by "1984". Put another way, the idea of "Big Brother" is presented as a bad thing in "1984"; hence, anything that subsequently materializes of any relative similarity must, therefore, be bad.

A few days ago I was in Times Square and in broad day light I see this pimp beating on his ho. She's already missing one front tooth. Her purse and shoes are on the ground behind her. She tries to run away but he goes after her and grabs her jacket. People are just walking by this trying to ignore it, but I try to go look for a cop. (You can never find one when you need one). After a few minutes I walk by again on the other side of the street then three cops run up. All I could hear her saying was "No, I'm fine." then the cops walked away. Fucked up.
