THE condition of a 15-year-old Chitungwiza girl, who is claiming she is being haunted by goblins, worsened yesterday.
Her family rushed her to a spiritual healer after she said she was now possessed by a bigger goblin than the one that has been possessing her.
The girl’s mother and her neighbour whom the girl claims is the owner of the goblins haunting her were called to a police station in the area for counselling.
The neighbour had reported to police that some people were now calling her a witch.
Police spokesman Inspector Andrew Phiri last night said they had advised the two families to stop fighting.
"We have asked for some names of the people who called her a witch before she pressed any charges.
"According to the Witchcraft Suppression Act, it is an offence to call someone a witch and we shall arrest anyone who is going to break that law," Insp Phiri said.
The girl’s mother said they rushed her daughter to a spiritual healer after her condition worsened.
"We locked her in another room after she became violent and began speaking in a different voice from the one she was using in the last three weeks," she said.
She said the girl claimed that the other goblin had left and was now possessed by a bigger one.
"This time the goblin refused to say its name and indicated that it would kill my daughter for exposing the other goblin," she said.
The director of the Zimbabwe Mental Health Association Mrs Elizabeth Matare who visited the girl at her Zengeza 5 home yesterday said she was suffering from mental illness and needed urgent medical help.
"I was very disturbed by the girl’s plight and will assist the girl and also counsel the family," she said.
Mrs Matare said when families are faced with such situations, they are overwhelmed and fail to understand the cause of the mental illness.
"There is need for medical intervention and according to the Mental Health Act of 1996, treatment in this country is free.
"As an association representing the mentally ill, we shall try and monitor the girl’s illness the best way we can," she said.
Mrs Jane Moyo, one of the neighbours of the girl’s family, said they were convinced the girl was acting under the influence of goblins.
"We do not think this child needs psychiatric help. No tablets are going to exorcise the spirits.
"If it is a psychiatric problem, then why is the girl revealing our dark secrets, bad things that happened to some families before she was even born," Mrs Moyo said.
The Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association’s information and publicity secretary, Mr Peter Sibanda last night said they had assigned a specialist in that area to assist the girl.
"We believe no medical doctor can treat such illnesses. We are afraid that if the matter is not urgently addressed the goblins can harm the girl," he said.
The association’s specialist Mr Amon Ndlovu said he was willing to help the girl.
"When I visited the home there was chaos because the mother had gone to the police. I shall return tomorrow (today) and try to help," Mr Ndlovu said.
Mr Maxwell Nyamangara, a counsellor, said the girl could be suffering as a result of an avenging spirit haunting the family.
"What is disturbing is the openness of the goblins because usually they speak in the presence of spiritual or traditional healers."
Mr Nyamangara said if the girl is really under the influence of goblins, they could be behaving in that manner because they were angered by their owner for failing to honour promises.
"The evil spirits have become wayward and reckless and only seek to expose their owner because they are not getting what they were promised," he said.
This was newsworthy?
