Ok, so I was sitting around this morning, not doing much, just catching up on the forum, when I noticed this paintchips birthday thread. I said to myself, “self, you should post in that”. But not just any post. This should be a post to honor said paintchips. So I sat around some more, trying to come up with something appropriate. Now, since I’m at work, I can’t very well drink myself silly, so that’s out. And I already showered, so it’s too late to skip it. I finally decided that I should just start typing and see what I came up with.
While I was thinking, I started looking stuff up. I’m sure most people already know the history of the birthday song, but here it is for the uninformed. And since I really don’t want to have to spend any money at all on you, just pretend I sang it to you.
quote: The melody to the song “Happy Birthday to You” (also known as "The Birthday Song") was written in the 1890’s by an American woman by the name of Mildred Hill. Her sister Patti, who was a teacher, put the lyric “Good morning dear teacher, good morning to you” to fit the melody. The song grew in popularity over the years and was eventually sung in schools across the US. Forty years later, Patti came up with the words "Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday to You, Happy Birthday Dear , Happy Birthday to You," and fit those words to her sister’s melody. The entire song was then published in 1935. The song was popularized later in the 1930's when it was sung in the Broadway production of “As Thousands Cheer,” and has since become the mega-classic hit of all time. One final interesting tidbit: The "Happy Birthday to You" song (lyrics and melody together) are still under copyright protection, so every time you hear it sung on TV or radio, for example, royalties are being paid to the publisher (Warner Chapel, in the US).
And while I was searching, I decided to see what google would come up with for the terms Paintchips and poetry. After informing me that perhaps I meant “paint chips”, I found this. I present this as an Ode to Paintchips, since everyone knows how much good poetry is appreciated around here.
quote: Clouds
As paint chips and bleeds from two decades
Still rusted dull nails remain strong
I cling tightly to a rock -- the rock
The only hope for my salvation
As I breath in the pureness from the ocean that surrounds me
I realize the reason for my being culminates into a symphony
Yet a mockery of the one thing that's kept me well
Even now I take in the life of the ocean smell
And sing praises to the King who in my defiance
Denies me not as time does the tide
Forever lost on the shore
I want to be more like the one who shaped me
More than I ever thought I could be
Still I know in my ascension the purity will fade
Taken by the suffocation of a fresh coat of paint
Well, I’ve been at this far too long (honestly, I don’t know how you make such lengthy posts), so I quit now. I just wanted an appropriately wordy post to dedicate to you on your birthday.
Happy day Brad.
By the way, you really don't smell as bad as they say.
