Grandson of an army vet, as well as the great nephew (is that how it would work with my grandfather's brother? Geneology isn't my bag) of a vet of the same war (WW2).
My grandfather told me a few stories every now and then when I was younger. My Uncle Dale tried to teach me Morse Code and how to operate a HAM radio before he died. My grandfather got to ride through a typhoon on a carrier and had some amusing stories to tell about that.
Neither of them ever got shot, luckily, although the did get involved with some combat a couple times. Whenever I asked about it Grandpa would just say that it wasn't a pleasant thing to have to do.
My grandfather mainly did road construction for new bases and Dale was a communications guy.
I'm awfully proud of 'em both.
If memory serves me correct I think that Dale's son Vance almost served in Vietnam but never left the States because by the time it was his time to go it was over. Or something. Never did really press too hard about it when Vance was in Kansas.
On my mom's side my grandfather served in either the Navy or the Army. I don't think he ever went to war, but I just recently (as in just this year) found out he was in the military at all, so I didn't know. One of my mom's cousins was in the Gulf War and came down with Gulf War Syndrome and died.
So, yeah.
