LONDON - British detectives could go undercover on London streets disguised as tramps with mongrel sniffer dogs to intercept any suicide bombers, the Telegraph newspaper said today.

The technique is being pioneered amid fears Britain could face an al Qaeda bomb attack.

"There may be areas which are difficult, but the initial stage of training has gone better than expected," Inspector Keith MacKenzie, who heads the project, was quoted as saying.

"There is no mechanical device that can detect explosive vapour as well as a dog," he added.

Britain is on alert for attacks, with Prime Minister Tony Blair saying on Monday he received almost daily intelligence warnings of new threats.

By disguising themselves as vagrants, police officers would be able to move unnoticed around London, which has a high number of homeless people.

The article said cross-breed dogs would be trained to scent explosives at 20-30 metres and to alert handlers without unnerving a potential bomber.

Scotland Yard Deputy Assistant Commissioner Barbara Wilding was quoted as saying that the technique, which was one of many on trial, was being keenly watched by other security agencies.

"The rest of the world is watching this scheme to see if it can be operationally viable," she said.

Its funny that of all the demographics they could have used to become unnoticed (beyond just taking off their uniform) they chose bums, because they have alot of them.

Many of the homeless have dogs, too; most other people in the city centre don't have a dog with them.
