A 23-year-old Norwegian woman who's been nursing her infant son suddenly found herself faced with 10 more hungry mouths when her dog died after giving birth to a large litter of puppies. She literally took them all to her breast.

Kine Skiaker has been nursing not only her three-month-old baby, but 11 puppies as well.

"I just did what I felt was right," Kine Skiaker told newspaper Aftenposten.
The drama began when the Skiaker's Canarian Warren Hound (kanarihund). started having her puppies last Friday at Siggerud in Akershus, west of Oslo. The first puppy emerged without incident, but then the deliveries suddenly stopped.

Skiaker and her husband Ivar, sensing something was wrong, soon rushed their dog to a local veterinarian who quickly decided to perform a Caesarean section. In all, 14 puppies were born, but four died and then the mother died as well.

Faced with 10 helpless puppies, Skiaker defied the vet's advice against offering them her own milk. "Some of the puppies began to nurse right away, others needed some prodding," she says.

So far, Skiaker has nursed six of the puppies along with her own son, three-month-old Emil. The other four puppies seemed to respond to a dog's milk replacement product.

As the weekend progressed, the Skiakers managed to find foster-mothers (of the canine kind) for all the puppies. By Sunday, Skiaker and her husband managed to get a full night's sleep.

i saw some chick on some daytime tv talk show who was arrested for still nursing her 8 year old son and 6 year old daughter. now THAT is worse than nursing puppies.

That sucks that the woman was arrested for nursing her older children. There is no reason why that is inherently wrong. It is common throughout the world to nurse children until they are 5, 6 years old. Nothing wrong with it, unless you have fucked up Freudian conservative values.

Isn't it bad for a child's teeth to be breast fed after a certain age? And I've heard of lots of children who have been breast fed quite a ways after the age of 1, just not up until the age of 8..

The worst part of this story was a quote that wasn't included in this article. I'll see if I can find it later. It was something about how the vet told her the puppies only needed to eat every three hours, but she fed them more often because she liked doing it. Yuck.

About nursing children, most books that I've read recommend doing it for 18 months in order for the child to get the maximum benefits. After that, it does them no good, health-wise. I don't think kids should be breastfed after that, and not just because it starts to get really creepy. There are medical reasons to stop while they are babies (including bottle rot) but also because most kids become lactose intolerant around age 2. Their bodies are not made to process any kind of milk past that age. Of course, I also think it's wrong to let kids keep a binky past age 1 or so, again for developmental reasons.

I nursed my first son for 14 months, and by that time we were down to two feedings a day, and the health benefits of what little he was getting was small enough to just give it up without any harm. The mothers who keep nursing until their kids are in grade school are only doing it for themselves. They are lying to themselves if they think the kids will get anything positive out of it.

It is relatively common for breastfeeding to continue well after most children have been weaned, according to an Occupational Therapist that I used to know. Probably isn't that good for you, though; in any case, I have been told that milk becomes of less use to you as you age because you lose the rennet that you have as a baby, which coagulates the milk in your stomach for easier digestion.

I am also surprised that the dogs could survive and grow properly on human milk. Cow's milk apparently isn't that great for us because it isn't for us (I mean, it probably isn't that bad for most of us, either, but it isn't very digestible to humans, so I have been told).

In the spirit of open-mindedness, I decided to see what it felt like. I tried to get my adult golden retrievers to suck my nipples, but they weren't going for it. I smeared peanut butter on them (my nipples, not the dogs) and they just lapped at them a few times. It felt really great.

Unfortunately, I didn't get the same sensation I would have from hungry (toothless) puppies suckling my hairy man-teats, so I just have to guess that it's probably pretty fucking cool. It sure made my uterus throb, I'll tell you.

Does anyone know where to get baby chimps? I'll bet those little fuckers can really put a lip-lock on the nips. I'd like to try that next.
