What do you think when a terror warning is reported?

I noticed a poll on this elsewhere and wondered what the concensus is in here.
There was a 6 page letter just released by Al-Jazeera that is supposedly from Al Qaeda offering more vague threads and we are reading of a large and eminent threat put out by the FBI.
We have had numerous reports/warnings since 9-11 but nothing happened. Bali was bombed with no public prior knowledge. Yeah, it ain't in the US so the FBI wouldn't know but this is supposed to be a world wide multi agency effort so it does play in.

Waddya think?

I just voted that "yes, it does concern me."

When I read the following, I get upset:

"Al Qaeda may be planning a "spectacular" terrorist attack intended to damage the U.S. economy and inflict large-scale casualties, the FBI warns.

The FBI's regular weekly law enforcement bulletin, circulated Thursday to officials nationwide, contains no information about the timing, location or method of a possible attack. Even so, the warning is unusual because of its dire language.

"Sources suggest al Qaeda may favor spectacular attacks that meet several criteria: High symbolic value, mass casualties, severe damage to the U.S. economy and maximum psychological trauma," says the alert, which was posted on the FBI's Web site early Friday after its existence was reported by The New York Times and The Associated Press. It originally had not been released to the public.

The highest priority targets remain within the aviation, petroleum and nuclear sectors, as well as significant national landmarks, it adds. "

This gets my attention pretty good, and whether there's an attack in my city or in a city thousands of miles away from me, I still feel sick inside.

i tend to look on the warnings rather cynically. even if something were to happen, the vague "something might happen in the near future" is hardly sufficient notice. if i were in an area that made sense as a target i might be a tad more alert or avoid sightseeing at the pentagon or something, but i'm not. also, no warning thus far has preceded an attack. so, i guess it's the last one. i see "be on the alert!" as something that applies all the time. they might as well be issuing drunk driver warnings.

A bio/chem attack would be worse. For instance, to think about a smallpox attack, is to think about our way of life ending as we know it. I read somewhere that if you could catch AIDS the way you can catch the flu, then just about everyone on earth would either have AIDS or being dying from it. That's what a smallpox attack cold do.

This is a new world we're living in, I'm telling you!

Simple to do, just set off a nuke in one of the many fissures of Yellowstone Park. The entire park is a scabbed over caldera of a massive volcano. In fact, the crust has lifted many feet since they started watching it back in the 20's. It's already like a big pimple ready to pop and is due now for it's every 600,000 year eruption. (They have proof of 2 such eruptions in the past on schedule.) The bomb, if big enough, would pop the caldera open, effectivly blanketing the entire west in soot and rack it with monster earthquakes.

I imagine that the next attack against us will be from another direction we can't even imagine. It'll be big, no doubt, but I think that despite all our preparadness, it'll take us by surprise. By our vigilence against what we expect, we only train the enemy to know what to do to get around out defenses. Sort of damned if we do and damned if we don't.

it concerns me because i work in a tall building with somewhat decent security. so when warnings go up the security gets a little tighter and the cops wandering around look at me a little closer. of course the day the decide i look suspicious will be the day i forget to take a knife out of my pocket and they'll think i'm a terrorist trying to hijack the building and fly it into a plane.

Pity about retiring from porn. The quality (and quantity) of porn posts has degraded significantly since you disappeared.

Hey, MrB.
I live in a spot that wouldn't be directly hit. No advantage to any sort of an attack on a 30,000 population tourist town.
I am downwind of southern California though.
Dispite that, I don't feel directly threatened when I hear the warnings.

I like how this thread turned into Rosh begging for porn.

Let's see, I live in Southern California...Los Angeles area. Dirty bomb and all that pretty stuff can affect me. Nevertheless, I am cynical about it. Of course, that's me. There are people that let things like this keep them from living their normal lives. Funny, that. We were told by the shrub to go on with our normal ways and ever since he made that statement, we've done anything but. Guess I'm just a dirty traitor to the country or something, though.

Probably mainly so the people who have to try to interpret all of the signs and signals out there don't have their agencies gutted after another attack when congress complains that they never told anyone and are incompetent.

I usually think "I hope they don't raise the fucking Homeland Security Advisory color," because my employer now ties some operations to the color system and anything higher than the current level = me working 24/7. (well not ME working 24/7, but my department will, which gives me all kinds of fun night/weekend work).

Whenever they issue a terror warning I treat it like the last umpteen zillion warnings: I ignore them. I react more to a tornado advisory than a terror alert.

Most likely not, actually. Remember that last bio attack? Millions were exposed, 5 died. Yes, I know that smallpox and other relatives of Captain Trips can fuck us up real bad, but the chances of that are literally right up there with getting hit by an asteroid.

As dangerous as bio/ chem can be, it is very very very difficult to execute a successful attack that will kill hundreds and thousands. It would fuck our minds of course, and as such are great instruments of terror, but the actual physical risk is rather low.

Japanese terrorists gassed packed subways and only killed a couple dozen. I'm not trying to belittle those deaths, but thousands of people were exposed to sarin gas in a small underground crowded breathing area and only a few died. The same group sprayed anthrax and other toxins in the air from a car and no one got sick.

Bio/Chem weapons really aren't all that dangerous when you stop to think aobut how difficult it is to get them to work. Of course the risk is there, but its a small one in the scale of things.

With regard to thread topic, I agree with DMoon in that they (gov't agencies) suspect something *might* happen and don't want to get in trouble for not sayinga nything about it. The warnings don't empower the people to do anything different at all. It's not like people aren't being vigilant and paranoid most of the time but start paying attention when a new terror warning comes out. I'm fairly certain that the next attack will not be predicted in this sense.

One other possibility is that they give the terror warnings when they suspect an attack to try to scare off the attackers. If terrorists can be convinced that the authorities ahve caught wind of what they are doing, they may back down and wait. If this is true and this does work, it won't work forever, but its something.

We have been getting them here on and off for years and years, and of late have had a flurry of them (these relating to Al Quaida). London is the obvious target for the attack that Blair seems convinced is coming, so we will have to see how we cope with it if and when it does happen.

Smallpox is not as dangerous to the whole of America as you might think; it is bad, for sure, but it is hardly going to wipe you all out. You can kill it off even without vaccines (which is how they did it in India, they just isolated all the sufferers).

I would think that a really dangerous bioweapon attack would be from the US or Russia, who have spent a lot of time and money researching it, or from someone who bought the stuff from one of those two countries (ie, from Russia); it is sadly entirely possible that anyone does have russian weapons because since the fall of the Soviet Union, soldiers and scientists have been selling off God knows what to make up for not getting paid regularly or sufficiently. The threat ought to be taken seriously anyhow, of course; if it is believed that Al Quaida (and when I say 'believed' I mean 'believed by people in the intelligence community') have proper Soviet bioweapons then that is a big cause for concern and probably many of us will die here in London if they can find a proper way of releasing them over the city/into the water supply/whatever.

I don't see that there is much point, given the vagueness of the warnings (and if our governments really knew details of a plot, they would just stop it rather than try to keep us alert and peturb the terrorists) in hiding in your home. I mean, people still live on the East Coast of the US and yet experts appear to agree that 1) the Casa Vieja in the Canary Islands is unstable and will at some future date (maybe up to 200 years or anytime before that) will collapse into the sea, and 2) the East Coast of the US is going to be hit by a gigantic tsunami a couple of hours or so later. On the other hand, fear of massive terrorism aimed at population centres would be good for the midwest, which would have a new influx into the gene pool as people flee from fear; the native midwesterners would, of course, still copulate with family members for the practice, but they wouldn't have to marry and breed with them, instead impressing a big city boy or girl with their rural charm, their easy way with farm animals and their high tolerance for mind-numbing boredom.

Was there any warning for the 9-11??
If a faction has the intention to do something then they are not going to tell anyone till after the fact. All the terror threats are set out to disrupt our way of life be it here or in any free living country.... If we take notice of them and start to panic or make big issue such as posting a high level public warning and then withdrawing it as the ass's did over here and called it a mistake then the terrorists threats have done the job they were intended to do.
By saying this though I do not mean we should blindly ignore them... they should serve as a reminder that there are fuchwhits out there and you should live every day to its full potential cause you never know what may be round the next bend .... lifes to short as it is don't waste it on worry
