Defrag

Can someone reccommend a freeware download of a disk defragmenter program other than Diskeeper or DiskeeperLite, for Windows 98? It can be a trial version of a defragger or the actual program itself. The computer I am using right now has its defragmenter erased, and Diskeeper will not install properly.

Some links in the middle of the page, never tried them but I know Executive has a decent rep. Although I hate their undelete program. I use Norton's, but its not free.

How did defrag get deleted? Sure you just didnt lose the shortcut?

The shortcut may have been lost, the computer says the shortcut to it is missing. This computer got screwed up by someone else who had it for a few months. They loaded a bunch of games on it, then pulled the 56K out & put a 28.8K in place of it. When the owner got it back we discovered all this. A new 56K was installed, but now the defrag, disk cleanup, character map, clipboard viewer, drive converter (FAT32), and DriveSpace are all missing or shortcuts to them are gone, and many of the games loaded on here will not uninstall because their paths are missing. I am hoping that a defrag will help matters as a starting point, (this thing hasn't been defragged in at least 6 or more months) but I still need to figure out how to fix the rest of it.

I just thank God that this isn't my home computer!

And just about all of those utilities can be found in either C:\Windows\system or C:\Windows\system32

I found the defrag in C:\WINDOWS\system, but I get the message saying that the path or network connection to it is not there when I try to open it. I have no idea on how to reestablish the network connection.

The Executive site only has the Diskeeper defrag programs on it. I've tried to download it and install it, but when I do, a message pops up saying the program cannot install because of a previous Diskeeper program that needs to be uninstalled first. In the add/uninstall program, there is a Diskeeper workstation there. Whenever I try to uninstall it, the computer tries to install it instead. It will not install, nor will it let me uninstall it either. That is why I was looking for a defrag program other than Diskeeper.

I am now downloading the Raxco PerfectDisk trial version, so I will see where this gets me.

Defrag shouldn't need a network connection. None of those utilities need a network connection. Something's fishy.

I'd just wipe that POS clean and start over.

Nothing is "fishy".

It probably is just looking for a networked drive.

go to command, type in defrag.

Diskkeeper wouldn't install for me either for some other reason, so I ended up going with Norton. Although it's not free, they do have a trial version. The downside is that you've gotta download the damn thing and it's like pretty damn big (all of Norton Utilities, not just Speed Disk).

"Fishy" as in "off."

Not "fishy" as in "suspicious."
