no, not at all. I'm just learning it now, and at that stage where I know just enough to be dangerous, and it seems as though the sky is the limit. For some reason I always assumed it was some stripped down, crippled version of c, I had no idea it was so powerful and well developed, and php.net is just great. I'm wishing I learnt it years ago.

There's quite a handy book you might like, phpforflash, there's a support site at www.phpforflash.com.

It assumes a basic knowledge of flash and then adds php and mysql, final tutorial is a to construct a forum in flash.

Book number II has just been released, but it looks a little boring, anyhow, phpforflash is the book I always end up going back to when I've forgotten a basic principle or syntax or whatever.

Php is also a great springboard for learning actionscript.

Hmmm, I picked up a book on PHP a couple months ago, but never really got around to it. Maybe I should try again.

cool, thanks skalie, i'll definately check that out, pretty familiar with actionscript already.
Looks like the new book might be pretty good for me too, i'd like to make multi-player turn-based games with flash, but without using sockets on our web host...
The book I'm learning from is PHP4: A Beginner's Guide, and despite the title it's very good. Fast paced and to the point, though I've noticed a few basic PHP commands missing from it - passthru("unixcommand"); being a good example, but it does have refresher chapters on all sorts of associated areas like MySQL, HTML forms, Unix etc.

ew?
it's great!
although i cant get man output pages from it, but rm-rf, mv, ls, more, all that sort of stuff works, and / goes much higher than our ftp login does... our web host doesn't provide telnet access, but passthru on a secure php page is almost as good.
oh, and... they allow web based form-mail too!

This is exactly why it's ew. It lets you escape your chroot jail.

As for the man output, try using something like:

man -P cat <command you want the manpage for>

Or you could do:

gunzip -c /path/to/the/gzipped/manpage.1.gz | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc

OK, now I have a question...

Say you have a page that is 98% static, but needs small php bits all over it... in this case it's a form that refers back to itself, and i'd like to keep some of the previous entry ticked to save the user from reticking everything... Is it better to run many small php's embedded in the html or echo the whole page from inside a single php block?

why?

Same difference. The server is going to pass the entire page over to the php module regardless. PHP then decides which bits it needs to pay attention to and what not, does it thing and then spits the finished page back to the server.
