In 1633 the Massachusetts Bay Colony formed its first government.

In 1775 American officers in the Continental Army decided to bar free blacks and slaves from military service.

In 1818 two English boxers are the first to use padded gloves.

In 1840 the first Hawaiian constitution was proclaimed.

In 1862 Otto von Bismarck became the German Republic's Chancellor.

In 1871 the Great Fire of Chicago started, killing 200, and destroying over 4 square miles of the town. This fire was so famous, it overshadowed the gas explosion and fire of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, which killed more people and destroyed more area than the Chicago fire.

In 1896 the Dow Jones started reporting an average of selected stocks.

In 1912 the first Balkan War began with Montenegro declaring war on Turkey.

In 1915 the WW I Battle of Loos started, which killed over 430,000 French, German, and English soldiers.

In 1917 Leon Trotsky was named Chairman of the Petrograd Soviet.

In 1918 Sargeant Alvin York single-handedly killed 25 and captured 132 Germans.
