Christmas

I'm sure this is going to spawn a big debate that I don't really want to get into, but I'm rather curious. It's been on my mind for a couple days.

Ok, so I know most of you celebrate Christmas (this due to the asylum gift exchange and all). And I know that the majority of you think religion is a crock of shit (come on, you all can see where this is going)...so why do you celebrate Christmas?
Christmas is supposed to be the birth of Christ (hense the CHRISTmas), so if you think Christ never existed, why are you celebrating the birth of nothing? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it's a national holiday that way I have the day off. But I just wonder why you celebrate something you don't believe in.
"Yippie! I get to run around and spend money on people in hopes that they will spend money on me too!" Sounds great....

I don't celebrate christmas.

But i am doing the gift exchange thing. Only cuz it'll be interesting to see what I get, and I like giving gifts aswell (I don't need a holiday to do that).

I don't have a tree, lights, tinsil or anything eles in my house. I don't exchange gifts with my family, and I'm more then willing to work that day. I may go for dinner with my mom, but that's for her benift cuz i only see her about once a year.

time to spend with family and remember what life is really about, all the while trying to ignore what they tell you life should be about. at least, that's why i do. my family's pretty religious still, though. but i'm not.

Quite obviously cremma has nothing to do with either Jesus or saints, like the Coca~Cola Corporation cremma is all about commercialism, and just because something is religion based and we don't agree with religion doesn't mean we can't take it for our own to get what we want.

I don't celebrate Christmas. I don't exchange gifts with my family or anyone, and haven't in many years, but they still buy me stuff. Kinda makes me feel a little guilty.

Christmas hasn't been about Jesus in many, many, many, many, many years. It's now about mindless consumerism and, as you put it, "run[ning] around and spend[ing] money on people in hopes that they will spend money on me too!"

Oh, I'm sure some people celebrate it in a non-secular way (as in spending all day doing whatever it is they do) and that's nice, but for 90% of everyone else it's all about purchasing stuff.

Yes. Maybe.

"so if you think Christ never existed"

Not having a religious belief has nothing to do with whether he existed or was of enough significant historical importance to celebrate his birthday.
Hell, people take off from work on Columbus day like he fucking discovered something which is a crock of shit. He was lost, landed on an island and thought he was in India. We celebrate this moron for no peticular good reason so...

good point by the wonder there. I'm not religious but I don't doubt Jesus' existance.

I do doubt Columbus' existance though.

Putting aside any debate to the existence of a Jesus, his birthday wasn't even on the day we celebrate. Kind of insulting, if you ask me. I mean, wouldn't you, as the "lord and savior" of a group of people, want to at least have your birthday celebrated on the right day?

Well, if you believed this was your lord and savior you would think that having an accurate day to celebrate something as important as the birth of your lord would be something you would strive for.

I really assume this is a rhetorical question. If it isn't I can try and explain it better. But since I assume it is, I'll ask some rhetorical questions back.

What did you do for this Halloween? The one prior? Why?

What are your plans for this Fourth of July? Last year? Why?

Did you in any way intentionally feast on Thanksgiving this year? Why?

How do religious people celebrate Easter? Do they do funny things besides attending mass? Why?

et cetera, et cetera.

Flocat basically had it right. Somebody could equally make a case that we aren't true to Halloween because we aren't actually celebrating some pagan fucking-or-other, and at SPF, people made that case, endlessly. And if course if you're looking at it historically, you're right. But you're looking at it all wrong. For the vast majority of us, Halloween is the day that kids get candy and anybody can dress up in costume. New Years Eve is where people get drunk. Thanksgiving and Christmas are where families get together. Fourth of July is where people have barbeques and blow shit up. Et cetera, et cetera.

It's not just an easy concept to make sense of, it's practically intuitive to most people by now. I occassionally go to Mass on Christmas, but mostly, its the one time of the year when my family all migrate back to Topeka and we all get a week to visit. And that, not as a religious holiday, but as a yearly ritual, is worth doing to me. When Oct 31st rolls around, I don't burn witches. I dress up in a funny costume if I can, or I take little kids out to collect candy. That these things aren't true to the original intent of the holiday make them no less worthwhile, I don't think.

If I have to further explain the stupendifyingly obvious to you, let me know.

Again, why?

Two more questions:

1. If you spend centuries celebrating it on one particular day, and then find out the event actually happened on another day, what would be the relative merit of changing the hundreds of years of traditions?

2. If you were the lord and savior, how much would you give a shit that all ceremonies be historically accurate?

You started it.

Why? It's just a simple matter of courtesy and respect. I allegedly owe my chance at "eternal paradise" because this dipshit got nailed to a piece of wood. Wouldn't it at least be courteous if we got his birthday right?

1) Tradition means almost nothing to me. If I found out my birthday was really October 12 and not February 9, despite the fact that for nearly 20 years now I've been celebrating it on Feb. 9, I would start celebrating it on October 12, and adjust my age accordingly if needed. Really, it wouldn't be that big of a hassle.

2) I refer to my original statement of "respect and courtesy." If I were some big fancy Son of God and someone couldn't get my birthday right, and I just got my idiot ass nailed to some planks for their wretched souls, I would hurl lightning and sulphur at their stupid heads.

I'm essentially with Paintamaria on this'n. Regardless of one's religious leanings, or lack thereof, the universal wholesomeness of the message is undeniable, namely -- Peace on earth, good will to all men (or should we now say, "good will to all persons" ?). Y'all can be the hardened, crusty cynic all y'want the other 364 days of the year. But just this one day, let me be a kid once again; let me experience the pleasure of sharing and enjoying these good feelings with friends and loved ones; and if I so desire, on that one fine day let me believe in the wonderful possibilities represented by Santa Claus and other unprovable beings.

Amen.

Last Xmas was the best Xmas ever. I phoned my Dad, said
'Hey Dad, whatcha want for Xmas?'
he said 'Oh i dunno, some shirts or somethin'
I said 'Did you ever wear the stuff i bought last year?'
'Nah.'
'Say, want to get your own stuff this year? and I'll buy me a book from you?'
'Yea, that sounds good'
'Sweet as! Dont forget to wrap it, so's we can have a proper Xmas morning w/ pressies and all.'
'OK you too.'
'No prob, see ya xmas morning.'

Then I phoned my mom,

'Hi mum, what you want for Xmas?'
'Oh, I just spoke to Aunt Wassername, we're doing Secret Santa again this year.'
'Oh no. Who'd I get this time?'
'You got Uncle Whoosits.'
'Jesus, who's he?'
'You know, Aunt Thingamy's new husband.'
'Oh, right. So Mum, who'd you get?'
'I got you.'
'Really? your kidding me?!'
'No, I got you. Anything you want?'
..pause..
'Yea mum, I know what I want for Xmas.'
'What?! but you never want anything!'
'Yea I know, but this year... for Xmas, from you... I want you to buy something for Uncle Whoosits and say it's from me.'
'Oh, OK then. Good idea.'
'See ya xmas morning, Mum.'

Best Christmas Ever.

Until Aunt Whatsit's house burnt down that is.

i just like getting people gifts. often i'll, at random times, purchase things for people and simply hand them out for no reason. example; a few days ago i went to walmart at 11:00 at night and bought someone a cake, then went to her house and presented it at 12:30. this leads to people feeling bad for not having a return gift or thinking i'm strange altogether. i give gifts on xmas because i finally have an excuse to and it's a time i can do it without having other people feel bad.
