Hmm. You might try Splatterpunks. Volume one or two. They are anthologies of short stories. Quality varies, of course, but on the whole I found them quite entertaining. The added bonus here is that you might discover an author (or three) that you like.

I know I have long since turned my nose up at Stephen King. I loved him in grade school, but have since tired of him. Anne Rice's books (her vampire chronicles, at least) are like junk food for me. Lots of fun but not sustaining. Splatterpunks fills a somewhat similar purpose. Poppy Z Brite's Love in Vein also fits this category. This time it is a collection of vampire shorts. The castrati story is quite grand.

Lovecraft can be fun, if you're in the mood to learn new synonyms for "tentacled". Seriously, though, I always enjoy a good dose of Lovecraft.

Clive Barker The Damnation Game

just read this...not a bad read, Clive has quite the knack for smooth writing...you start reading a chapter and next thing you know you're halfway through the book in one sitting.

In a fucked up contrast to most of the silly shit he writes, Piers Anthony wrote an incredibly creepy book called Firefly. You might wanna check it out. I wonder if I still have my copy.

so will 'From a Buick 8' be Stephen King's last novel? I'm most of the way through and still waiting for the "Kingscare" to set in... I think that van that hit him jogging moved something in the "scare them" part of his brain... but maybe he is just drawing me in for the kill.... HOPE SO!

He's putting out the rest of the Dark Tower series over the next year and a half. DT5=Nov 2003, DT6=Summer 2004 (I think), DT7=Nov 2004.

Wetbones is a fun, if gruesome horror.

Certainly the only horror book that ever held my attention.

Try some Robert McGammon.

"Swan Song" was a good one, as is "They Thirst" and some werewolf one about Rommel in Africa whose title escapes me at the moment. He writes some decent shit, but it's been awhile (like 10 years). Like King, he seems to write one novel about each type of horror (aliens, satan, ghosts, nuclear war, werewolves, vampires, etc.) and move on. Shit, I might be inclined to find some more of his stuff now, I forgot how much I liked it. And if it sucks, well, I was 14 when I remembered liking it, so fuck you.

I didn't think Koontz was that talented of an author. I like King and Straub, together and apart. Shirley Jackson is good too.

Here's a couple of short stories that I found creepy@ Writing.Com:
I Found Him
Genesis (Unfinished)
