Global Peace Marches

Well.. so far it doesn't seem to be as big of a thing as they threatened. I must say I have only been cruising the news channels but it seems a bit more lackluster than the marches 12 years ago.
A buddy just called me to see if I could come down to the local one, so far only 10 or 12 people have showed up. (I told him he called the wrong duckie)
Any news in your area?

Nothing going on in Pasrker County, Wonder. Our local liberals probably didn't get the word--or maybe it is too chilly for them to be out and about.

Here I expect it to draw quite a few people, it starts right away. The last one had about 900 people marching down the main st yelling "FUCK AMERICA". I expect much the same today.

I posted this at another forum in reply to one of those "no blood for oil" drones. I thought it merited being posted here:

"Also, with all your crying about civilian casualties I would think you’d have been screaming to remove Saddam on his human rights violations...lovely little things like torturing children in front of their parents cause one of their parents dared to dissent...and that’s if they are lucky because killing off a man's entire family for infractions is pretty widely practiced, his off spring are just as ruthless. So why aren’t you crying about that? That happens every day with no hope for change less someone comes and helps them. With war at least there is hope of change. I saw a family who made it out of Iraq respond to a question about what they thought about people like you, the mother's eyes welled up while the father said "they should just be quiet, they don’t know what they are talking about. Living under saddam is hell and it is a better death to die from a bomb than to be tortured by Saddam's men."
I have seen others talk about what happened to them, their eyes glass over, and I’ve seen them kick like they were falling in a dream while they relived through memory the nightmare that is Saddam's rule. These are the people who dare to protest, try and start political movements, just verbally dissent. They are killed off right away...no chance unless they live in areas saddam doesn’t control.

You sir are no friend of the Iraqi people. You are a champion of trendy, fashionable politics based in ignorance or limited understanding. If you were honest in your stance and not blinded by your hate for Bush you would welcome change for these people whose suffering you claim to champion.

But I digress."

any protester saying they are protesting in the name of the people of Iraq are grossly deluded...unless by the people of Iraq they mean the current government...imo.

I think most of the protest here is just "anti-war 1-2-3-4 what are we fighting for" kinda thing. It's not about saving the Iraqians, I mean god sakes this war has nothing to do with the people of Iraq. If it was about "saving" the people it would of been done along time ago.

If this war happens (and it I guess it will) it's gonna be about spitting in the face of the UN. It's gone so absurb now that Bush can't stop his train. If he backs down then he's weak so he has to follow through even if he knows that the UN doesn't back him. He wants justice for his christian's god damnit! But really is it any more right to kill in the name of god then it is to kill in the name of allah? or what ever. War doesn't have to happen, but it will and people will die, mostly Iraq civs beause they all look like the enemy to a 20 yr old with a gun...SHOOT THE RAG HEAD....and such...I should get some sleep I'm babbling.

You go to the BBC and what’s linked on drudge and look at the pictures of those protesters and the signs and costumes they are wearing...you are wrong as far as the majority of the sentiment goes. And no this war isnt about saving the Iraq people...I never said it was...but if these people truly cared for the Iraqi people they would welcome change no matter who brought it. The tyranny they suffer under is not culture...their oppression is not a" right" they choose" lol

You are wrong, most of the UN does back him, its just 3 or 4 that dont.

My respect for you and your redeeming qualities will keep me from using the ghetto kung fu on this one. Ill just say, Bush hasn’t said anything Clinton hasn’t said...not one thing different...Blair is saying the same things Bush is. Are Blair and Clinton Christian warriors too? Don’t let your dislike of Bush blind you from logic and honesty.

No it doesn’t...but the consequence of it not happening are far greater than those of it happening.

The London march was huge, biggest demonstration ever here, I believe. 500 000 were expected, but the police say that they got at least 750 000 (as normal, the organisers claimed more, but 750 000 is a lot even if it is only that many).

And there doesn't have to have been a riot (de rigeur at 'peace marches'). Weasel Spoor will no doubt be able to make a report, assuming that he got up in time.

I was gettin on the bus in Uptown where they're supposed to have a "stand-in" for peace or somethin like that. There wasn't but one guy at the site itself when I was goin by, but I could see folks comin that way. I reckon there'll be a sizeable turnout here and in St Paul at the capitol, but then, this is the Twin Cities and not Lynchburg. We have the third largest university by enrollment in the nation. Surprisingly, the fourth largest, ahead of Arizona, is Miami-Dade Community College.

Yep.

If you don't rate the UN and ignore congress, why the fuck would you consider taking popular opinion into consideration?

Futility indeed.

OK, let's rate the UN, congress, and public.

Which of these has a decided majority against war?
Which has a decided majority for war?

Great game, and the French played as entertaining as ever, shame there weren't more punch ups.

Suspiciously good sport on the BBC today I thought.

Well today the man on the street seemed to be rather against, if I may say.

Were there protests around your way "More blood for oil" or someit?

Half that many have converged on Daytona, Florida. Not for a peace march but for a car race tomorrow.

We are a World of "armchair activists." Somebody e-mail me a petition.
