By the way slight, the main flaw in your reasoning (trying to equate us with Saddam) is Truman isn�t our president anymore. If Truman was still our president you might have an argument...though probably not. imo

phorbie, you and I did this in chat last week, so you should know where it's going.

The reason I asked this in the forum is the surprising number of people toting 'DISARM AMERICA' placards at those global peace rallies.

Of course it's idealistic, and I for one am not niaive enough to beleive it is ever possible. But there is a nice irony in this line of reasoning.

The most commonly purported reason that the US needs it's nukes is as a deterent to other nations from using WMD. However, Saddam has not been detered, so the US will now invade Iraq.

Given that the US could just as easily invade Iraq without the nukular weapons, what point exactly will they serve in the future?

Lets weigh up the pros and cons.

cons:
proven ineffectual as a deterent.
have the potential to destroy human civilization.

pros:
... ?
