adrenaline...

wow...

I have a buddy who is the proud owner of a '03 Skidoo MXZ 800. (it's a really fast snowmobile for the southerners) I've ridden it before, but it was in the middle of the night and it's hard to avoid icehouses at 80mph in the dark. Until today i have never traveled more than 60mph on a lake (frozen or not).

Today I went over 100mph on a frozen lake. It took three tries. The point was to buzz our ice fishing house at 100mph or more, but the problem is our ice house is about 100 yards from the shore, so after passing the icehouse you have 100 yards to stop. That is entirely possible, but while approaching the shore that fast you tend to freak out.
Anyways, first, let me tell you about this sled. This sled is one of the most exhilerating experiences of my life. The day you experience going from a standstill to 60mph in 3 seconds, then from 60mp to 100mph in another 3, you can have your special day of reckless nostalgia also.

So, back to my story. I've ridden snowmobiles before, but never 'good' snowmobiles. I won't even try to describe how fast this thing is because it's not possible with words. It's fucking fast. So anyways, our goal was to buzz the icehouse at 100+mph as i said. it was me and two buddies. (slotech who is registered but never posts, and naked shawn from some cam shots ive posted). Anyways, slotech goes first. slotech is really named sothik, which is cambodian, which makes sense seeing that he's cambodian. whatever the fuck he is he's always the one willing to do stupid shit flawlessly to convince other people that it's safe to do stupid shit too. (like jumping off 100ft cliffs at taylors falls, mn)

So Sothik gets a 300 yard run and buzzes us really fucking fast. Looks like he barely stops before hitting the shore, but he comes back and says only low 90's. He goes back for another and the fucker flew by, at over 100 he claims, and i dont doubt him.

Then Shawn, he goes really fast too, but not as fast as Sothik. (Sothik weighs about 150 while me and shawn weigh 220ish). I'm not sure what Shawn claimed he was going, but it was mid-90's.

So it's my turn. Like i said i've never gone over 60 on a sled (well maybe for very short bursts) but i have floored this machine and felt the power before, the accelleration is completely and totally awesome...
So anyways, it's my turn to try to hit 100mph by the icehouse which is unsafely close to the shore. I get a very good run, find a good path, and gun it. I just held down the throttle, and i was freaked... lakes are not smooth, they have drifts and lumps and high areas and low areas and such, so you leave the ground now and again. That's really not a big problem though, as natural drifts and such are very smooth and fluid. What I worry about is the spearfisherman who carved out a big chunk of ice and laid it on the lake, or a plowed lake road with 3'-6' banks. The thing is you can't really steer a snowmobile when it's going really fast. You can guide it, but you can't turn it. Hitting unexpected obstacles at high speeds could not be fun. Basically I'm a pussy. Anyways as I was coming to the icehouse (maybe 50ft away) i looked at the speedo and it was just above 90. I went back for another shot, and my second run was just above 95. Both were such a rush i cant explain it. I've gone over 120 in a car before, for hours in fact across Montana, but there's something different about the snowmobile.

Later I found a long slick of fresh, untracked snow about 2 miles long. I gunned it, and when you gun it you can't think about anything but holding on for your life for a good 3 or 4 seconds, much less look at the speedo. When I did look at the speedo it was at 75, then 85, then 95 then 105. It teetered there for a few seconds before I decided i'd had enough, but the adrenaline is still running. Fucking awesome. I'm by no means the bravest though, Sothik jumped it over 40 feet. Crazy fucker.

What I'm trying to say is I need a snowmobile, and you idiots who make fun of the northerners have no idea what you're missing out on.

We are NOT, I repeat, NOT starting a collection to buy you a snowmobile.

If we gave you $10 000, the child support people would take it all from you anyway.

I have similar enjoyment when riding my bike (the one prior the theft) - GSXR1000, I managed to squeeze 186mph out of it on a trip to Salisbury. It is truely thrilling riding something that could kick you off and kill you in a blink.

My new bike is not as fast, only pulled 160mph out of it so far, but it sounds real sexy doing it though, whopping great big 1000cc V-Twin with Viper race cans on it.

mmm death-speed...

strangely enough, I have had at least 2 ducati owners say it sounds better, one had 996 (new one) and the other 748 (older model).

Plus side - it costs a quarter of what the new Duc costs

I was actually out on my dad's new machine last night for the first time ever. Well, it's new to him. He upgraded to a 98 Ski-doo touring SLE 700 triple from a 1970 OMC Snowcruiser (SnowCRUSHER) 440 with no muffler. Loud.

Anyway, it was a blast. It was dark though, and we were driving in the farmers fields that start just on the edge of my neighbourhood (Which for a part of it meant driving on city streets. My Dad doesn't like to leave evidence, so he drives a block down on the main road, then we take the alleys the rest of the way).

Anyway, these fields have lots of small clumps of trees, and in some areas they were planted along along fence lines. I like speed and all, but my real joy on a sled is blasting trails through the bush and rocking the sled in deep powder. So I was effing around last night and went to blast through a line of these trees only to realize that there was a strand of barb wire still between them. Hurray for brakes.

the death toll in maine from snowmobile related accidents is up to 12 this year.

I've only managed 130ish on my bike but it's only a weeny 650 v-twin. I will note, however, that I've stretched two chains getting there though.

the fastest I managed to get on a bike (no sledding experience here, so I have to use my bike stories to fit in .. lucky for me I'm not alone in this) was about 150ish on my friends ducati monter 900 that was all laced up. I think I could have gone a lot faster but I went from 0 - 130 so fast that when I crapped my pants the g force yanked it right out my pants and I was only left with a faint smell residue in my shorts, and I had to ease off a bit so my heart would start beating again.

yeah, that's because they figure they should be paid to read the manuals and try to figure out something they dont know.

You don't want to pay morons a cent, you want to pay people who know how to fix your bike to fix it (not pay people to learn how to maybe fix it). If you can't find anyone who knows Ducatis in Britain, you havnt looked.

P.S. i'd take a yellow 996 before the above pic anyday (i couldnt find a 996 superbike pic) but even so the above bike is just fucking god-like.

[pss - this is a reply to fuhchall (since a few peeps have responded while i was writing this]

[pss - NOT THE SUZUKI!!!]

100+ on a lake sounds fun, but you haven't snomobiled till you try the same thing up a rapidly steepening mountain side that tops out at about 85 degrees. Hold on and hope it doesn't avalanche on you.

And people wonder why I love drag racing.....
But you forgot to tag the 100mph back to 0mph line in there.
That's when things tend to go wrong, and get exciting.

you did actually hit the deer, however the volocity at which said encouter took place rendered the deer unhurt, in short you "passed though" the deer.

mmmm 150+mph.....

The only Pontiac capable of that in stock trim is a WS6 TA.
I've gone 160 before and a deer jumping in the road at that speed has no chance...neither do you.

160mph = 234.66 feet per second

He must have been WAAAAY down the road for you to slow down enough to avoid him.

I really didn't want to say it but now that you have, I concur. My above post was was a poor attempt to reach canibal on a hightened intellectual plane.
