adrenaline...
wow...
I have a buddy who is the proud owner of a '03 Skidoo MXZ 800. (it's a really fast snowmobile for the southerners) I've ridden it before, but it was in the middle of the night and it's hard to avoid icehouses at 80mph in the dark. Until today i have never traveled more than 60mph on a lake (frozen or not).
Today I went over 100mph on a frozen lake. It took three tries. The point was to buzz our ice fishing house at 100mph or more, but the problem is our ice house is about 100 yards from the shore, so after passing the icehouse you have 100 yards to stop. That is entirely possible, but while approaching the shore that fast you tend to freak out.
Anyways, first, let me tell you about this sled. This sled is one of the most exhilerating experiences of my life. The day you experience going from a standstill to 60mph in 3 seconds, then from 60mp to 100mph in another 3, you can have your special day of reckless nostalgia also.
So, back to my story. I've ridden snowmobiles before, but never 'good' snowmobiles. I won't even try to describe how fast this thing is because it's not possible with words. It's fucking fast. So anyways, our goal was to buzz the icehouse at 100+mph as i said. it was me and two buddies. (slotech who is registered but never posts, and naked shawn from some cam shots ive posted). Anyways, slotech goes first. slotech is really named sothik, which is cambodian, which makes sense seeing that he's cambodian. whatever the fuck he is he's always the one willing to do stupid shit flawlessly to convince other people that it's safe to do stupid shit too. (like jumping off 100ft cliffs at taylors falls, mn)
So Sothik gets a 300 yard run and buzzes us really fucking fast. Looks like he barely stops before hitting the shore, but he comes back and says only low 90's. He goes back for another and the fucker flew by, at over 100 he claims, and i dont doubt him.
Then Shawn, he goes really fast too, but not as fast as Sothik. (Sothik weighs about 150 while me and shawn weigh 220ish). I'm not sure what Shawn claimed he was going, but it was mid-90's.
So it's my turn. Like i said i've never gone over 60 on a sled (well maybe for very short bursts) but i have floored this machine and felt the power before, the accelleration is completely and totally awesome...
So anyways, it's my turn to try to hit 100mph by the icehouse which is unsafely close to the shore. I get a very good run, find a good path, and gun it. I just held down the throttle, and i was freaked... lakes are not smooth, they have drifts and lumps and high areas and low areas and such, so you leave the ground now and again. That's really not a big problem though, as natural drifts and such are very smooth and fluid. What I worry about is the spearfisherman who carved out a big chunk of ice and laid it on the lake, or a plowed lake road with 3'-6' banks. The thing is you can't really steer a snowmobile when it's going really fast. You can guide it, but you can't turn it. Hitting unexpected obstacles at high speeds could not be fun. Basically I'm a pussy. Anyways as I was coming to the icehouse (maybe 50ft away) i looked at the speedo and it was just above 90. I went back for another shot, and my second run was just above 95. Both were such a rush i cant explain it. I've gone over 120 in a car before, for hours in fact across Montana, but there's something different about the snowmobile.
Later I found a long slick of fresh, untracked snow about 2 miles long. I gunned it, and when you gun it you can't think about anything but holding on for your life for a good 3 or 4 seconds, much less look at the speedo. When I did look at the speedo it was at 75, then 85, then 95 then 105. It teetered there for a few seconds before I decided i'd had enough, but the adrenaline is still running. Fucking awesome. I'm by no means the bravest though, Sothik jumped it over 40 feet. Crazy fucker.
What I'm trying to say is I need a snowmobile, and you idiots who make fun of the northerners have no idea what you're missing out on.
