Do you believe Iraq has WMD?

Very simple, no moralizing, no justifying .... weapons of mass destruction (WMD) defined as chemical, biological, or nuclear.

Excellent, straightforward poll.

Amen.

Believe is not a very esoteric word, but I'll save the scramble to dictionary.com with this:

be·lieve ( P ) Pronunciation Key (b-lv)
v. be·lieved, be·liev·ing, be·lieves
v. tr.
1. To accept as true or real: Do you believe the news stories?
2. To credit with veracity: I believe you.
3. To expect or suppose; think: I believe they will arrive shortly.

v. intr.
1. To have firm faith, especially religious faith.
2. To have faith, confidence, or trust: I believe in your ability to solve the problem.
3. To have confidence in the truth or value of something: We believe in free speech.
4. To have an opinion; think: They have already left, I believe.

I won't define it further.

Of course it matters. That is the reason we are going in and it works as a reason because when we find them or he uses them on the military, the Iraqis, and every country around Iraq , we can say "See???" and it will justify the war.
If it was iffy as to his having them then we would have come up with another reason.
Like, he just needs to be shot (Texas law).

"Do you believe" and "can you verify" are two different things. I would be absolutely stunned if anyone didn't BELIEVE they had WMD; the existence of an Iraqi chemical arsenal has been common knowledge in the international community since at least 1976.

No, I didn't say that at all. I happen to truly believe he has them (not a working nuke atm) and I it seems the US and the UK do to. Of course they know they have them because they sold the shit to them (different administrations so that can be a reasonable excuse).

[layman opinion}I don't know how well it would do in a criminal court but I bet there's plenty enough to win in a civil court [/layman opinion}

This poll isn't useful for anything except determining how many people are willing to base their beliefs on nothing more than fearmongering. Fact is, no one knows what Saddam Hussein has, and the beliefs of Asylum patrons or the American public are indicative of nothing. A majority of Americans believe that God created humanity and deny evolution too, but that doesn't make it so. It's so confusing to me why we bang our wardrums so loudly in response to a nation whose capabilities are unknown while we are in the process of determining those capabilities, but we have casual-at-best attitudes towards countries with well established production and ownership of WMD.

My off-topic response can be found here.

Nice of you to write all that up, Nute, but 99.9% of it has nothing to do with the thread. Opinions of Asylum people do matter when we're debating and discussing on the Asylum.

Well... Tell us why you want to bomb Bagdad, Phil.

I didn't say that was my reason. It's a good one but basically, I don't have a "want" I just see that we are going to war. So, since we are going anyway, I hope that casualties are minimal, Saddam goes boom, Iraq gets a decent setup afterwards.

didn't I do that in the other thread? I want to secure the strategic and economic intersts of the UK in the region and Saddam poses a threat to them and is a headache. We need a compliant regime in to replace him. That's my reason. I don;t particularly care about WMD, they are a rather peripheral issue in my eyes.

Absolutely. It was confirmed as a result of Desert Storm that Saddam did, in fact, have WMD. Since then, the burden has been upon him to prove he destroyed them.

Amen.

lets be fair though JEB, from a purely legalistic standpoint, its largely impossible to prove a negetive isn't it? Its a bit like me saying to you 'prove to me that you have never owned a Vauxhall Chevette'.

I believe that Iraq may have a few chemical weapons tucked away.

But I don't consider a weapon that only kills people a weapon of mass destruction.

Would a neutron bomb be a weapon of mass destruction? It leaves everything standing, just wipes out the inhabitants.

Carpet bombing, that is mass destruction.

Therefore, as I don't believe Iraq has nukes I voted no.

And I feel justified in justifying my answer as it had to do with defining the original question.
