Does Carol Moseley-Braun stand a chance?

A woman presidential candidate and she's black. Now that would be special. Is it a realistic possibilty though?

From the November 1993 MediaWatch

Page Eight
Local, NBC Reporters Involved

Braun Scandal Suppressed

NBC reporters knew in October 1992 that Senator Carol Moseley- Braun had intentionally defrauded Medicaid. But they decided to sit on the revelation, Ruth Shalit reported in a November 15 New Republic exposé. Reporter Paul Hogan of NBC-owned WMAQ-TV in Chicago and Douglas Longhini, his producer, obtained a "type-written letter purported to be from Moseley-Braun to her mother ....the letter suggests that Moseley-Braun deliberately tried to defraud the state Medicaid authorities." In an apparent reference to an effort to hide her mother's assets, the letter included this sentence: "In an effort to help you `launder' the timber proceeds..."

Since Hogan had earlier raised "the rudiments of the Medicaid story," Moseley-Braun refused to talk with him. So, he and Longhini "then persuaded NBC correspondent Bob Kur to ambush her with the ten-line fragment at the end of an interview." Moseley- Braun did not deny writing the letter. Campaign media adviser Gerald Austin told Shalit: "People were shocked. We said, (a) she's going to lose the election, (b) she's going to be disbarred and (c) she's going to be indicted."

But voters never heard about the admission. Austin "got Hogan on the phone. `I did something I've never done in twenty years,' he says. `I talked a reporter out of a story. I said...`Here's one where you'll destroy this woman, and more importantly, the cause. If you go with the story, she loses, and you're responsible for denying the first African American woman the chance to go to the U.S. Senate.'" Shalit added: "Several hours later, Hogan called back and said he had decided not to go with the story.... Longhini, now a producer with ABC's Prime Time Live, confirms Austin's version of events. `Paul was quite agonized. He was a really good guy. Real liberal. He said, `You son of a bitch, I'll call you back.' We never went with it.'"

No word on why Kur and NBC News suppressed the revelation.

From http://www.thenewamerican.com/tna/1...09no06_know.htm

• Moseley Braun Blues. Carol Moseley Braun, the freshman senator from Illinois, has been through one political scandal after another since October. But her extreme leftist associates are more potentially dangerous to her political future than the allegations of medicaid fraud on behalf of her mother, sexual harassment by her campaign staff, political patronage, and living an extravagant life-style while her campaign remained more than $400,000 in debt.

Though largely ignored by the major media, Braun helped sponsor a benefit for Communist Party leaders Claude Lightfoot and Jack Kling in 1987. Proceeds from the dinner, which was also sponsored by longtime Communist Party luminaries such as Angela Davis and Herbert Aptheker, went to "benefit the movements and causes to which our honorees have devoted their lives," meaning the Communist Party and its fronts.

In addition, Braun's campaign manager/boyfriend, Kgosie Matthews, is a South African national with strong ties to the communist-dominated African National Congress. Matthews' father edited the ANC publication Sechaba, which was published from the brutal communist dictatorship Of East Germany. Kgosie keeps a flamed photo of Nelson Mandela in his office, and helped plan the released terrorist's tour of the United States in 1990.

edit: not exactly unbiased reporting here, but that's what they wrote.....

From http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL9911/S00012.htm

"The Moseley-Braun cloud involved some $280,000 in political donations that may have been diverted to pay for designer clothes, jewellery, cars and luxury vacations for her and her campaign manager and former boyfriend, Kgosie Matthews."

"The FEC did not clear Moseley-Braun of wrongdoing, but merely closed the books on the investigation with the five-year statute of limitations running out. The FEC stated it did not have time to conclude its investigation."

"The IRS Criminal Investigative Division initiated a probe into whether Moseley-Braun used this money for personal use without reporting the income and paying taxes. The IRS twice asked the Justice Department to open a grand jury investigation of Moseley-Braun and was denied," Chastain said

"Questions are now being asked how Moseley-Braun, a $45,000-a-year Cook County recorder of deeds, managed to afford such a lavish lifestyle in the months immediately after her election to the US Senate that included expensive vacations, travel by private jet and the Concorde and a $950-a-night suite in Maui? How did she manage to come up with the cash for a Jeep Cherokee or $10,000 for jewellery in Aspen?"

"And who authorised Matthews to charge thousands of dollars in designer clothes in Beverly Hills on his campaign-issued MasterCard? These are just some of the issues that the FEC and the Justice Department chose to ignore," said Chastain.

Moseley-Braun answered the criticisms about the expenses by saying she had earned extra cash doing legal work on the side and making paid speeches. Matthews says he was owed an equivalent amount of out-of-pocket expenses he had incurred on the campaign's behalf.

hmmm corruption, dodgy dealing, fraud. Sounds like she's probably a bit over-qualified to be President.

There have been other black female Presidential candidates, including Shirley Chisolm in 1972 and Barbara Jordan in1976. Jordan was a black female DISABLED Presidential candidate.

As a general rule, these candidates draw support almost exclusively from those people who think that the most important qualification a person can have is to be oppressed.

BUT - ina crowded political field where both the early primaries (Iowa and New Hampshire) are likely to go to regional candidates, thus denying the primary-voting public a front-runner, it's hard to predict what will happen. Only 17% of the electorate votes in the primaries, typically, and they are by far the most activist and partisan members of the parties; this is why politicians play to the fringes of left and right wing ideology early in the campaign, and once they've won the nomination, rush toward the political center. It is somewhat possible that, by virtue of her gender and skin tone, she will draw significant numbers of votes, especially when you consider that the other candidates are a bunch of white guys. I doubt she's a chance at the presidency, but it's possible she'd emerge as a vice presidential candidate.

What's going to make it so much mroe interesting this year is that we may very well not know who the Democratic candidate will be going into the convention. As I mentioned, the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries will likely fail to create a front runner, and then almost all the other primaries are crowded onto Super Tuesday shortly thereafter, and it's entirely possible that the candidates will split all those states among themselves and no one will receive a predominant share of the pie. Then they'll have to scramble to demonstrate how politically viable they are, and enter into all kinds of fun little support bargains, tying tickets together on the basis of support at the convention. It could be very fun - and possibly damaging for the candidate's chances in the election - it will spread Democratic funds over a wider field for a longer period of time, and the candidates will have to spend more time playing to the outer fringes of the party (the people who will be at the convention). 2004 may very well be the most interesting election cycle since the riots outside the Dem convention in Chicago... and maybe more so.

Leaky.

Jordan was also a lesbian - triple-play. But she was possibly the best orator this country has produced in a generation. I'd have voted for her on that basis alone.

Go to jail, go directly to jail. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.

Al Sharpton. And he doesn't stand a chance either. Her odds are less than his.
