Turkey wasn't bought.

Seems 15 billion US$ didn't rate against 94 percent of the population.

In a serious blow to U.S. plans for a possible war with Iraq, Turkey's parliament speaker nullified the legislature's vote Saturday to allow deployment of 62,000 U.S. combat troops to open a northern front against Iraq.

It was a narrow defeat... 4 votes short or somesuch...

I think there is going to be another vote on march 4.

Which will be too late for Turkey to benefit. They just shot themselves in the foot.

Well, if Turkey doesn't get the aid package if it waits till Tuesday, then they won't vote in favour of it then either. There was a guy from King's College London (War Studies department, I guess) on the news just now saying that it is pretty important to the US war plan to be able to operate from Turkey. He said that it could cause an awkward delay to the US war plan if the MPs don't reverse their decision on Tuesday.

Worth bearing in mind, before people condemn Turkey's government, that this was a vote by MPs, who are closer to their constituents (if Blair hadn't been threatening his own MPs with the political desert, he would have suffered a bigger rebellion himself, but he was able to crush them down) than the government as a whole is.

Not me. Just looking at the situation.
They hurry and pass it-
They get their money. They get to participate with their army with the cooperation and blessing of the US.

They drag their heels or don't pass it-
They don't get the money and their economy suffers without US aid.
They will have problems if they go into Iraq with their army as the US won't be backing their play and the Kurds will fight back.

The use of Turkey was not a must have to win the war. The outcome will be the same irregardless.
A No vote will cause them more problems in the long run than it will the US.

they will be soon. This idea that they have shot themselves in the foot is silly. Turkey will let their bases be used.

I dunno about that. Having a campaign from the South only is not gonna make military planners happy. A two pronged approach from North to South is much more desirable. That's why Turkey will be bought in the end, even if it happens after the shooting starts.

Not at present (not in here at least); when I said 'before' I was being literal. It aint over yet, as Phil points out, in any case.

I think that wonder is right in that the use of Turkish bases isn't crucial; the problem is that the plan would need to be changed if they can't be used and that would cause a delay (deployments would need to be changed and so on), and I gather that things are tight enough as it stands for fighting the war in such a way as to make the Pentagon happy.

Presumably the Turkish government will find a way to make the deployment of US troops from Turkey one way or the other.

Meanwhile, for those viewers in Singapore.

Turkey approves US troop deployment

The Turkish parliament approved the deployment of 62,000 US soldiers in the country for a possible attack on Iraq, parliamentary sources told AFP.

A total of 264 MPs in the 550-seat house voted in favour of the govenment motion, while 251 voted against, parliamentary sources said Saturday.

Nineteen deputies abstained.

Saturday's vote also allows for the dispatch of Turkish forces to northern Iraq in case of a war.

I don't suppose anyone has noticed or considered that the leader of the ruling party in Turkey is up for by-election at the end of the week have they?

There is prolly gonna be a reshuffle after that. I think that domestic politics is taking a precedence over international politics on this matter, and the State Department knows it.

Of course, its easier for the plevbs to start screaming and shouting at Turkey I guess.

Well, if that attitude is prevalant in the US, I look forward to Turkey becoming a hotbed of fundamentalist Islamic nutcases.

Only reason the Turks don;t want the US to invade Northern Iraq is so they can do it themselves. And kill loads of Kurds.

I got loads to do, Ill just post a log of what I said to someone when they asked me the same thing:

shante says:
lol, Ill get into it later...pretty much I see it as damaging to my country (and yours) in many ways. I see our soldiers put at more of a risk and saddam as a threat isnt a question

comment of why they might be doing it, election and shit

shante says:
it doesnt matter to me, its hurting us badly and will cost us lives

comment of they will come around

shante says:
the longer we wait, the more time saddam has to get ready

shante says:
the more time terrorists have time to get ready...they have said when we attack they will strike

shante says:
I could give a shit about an election, these are people's lives put at risk for doing something the whole world will benefit from while we get hassled by masses of idiots and countries like france and germany get all sorts of praise when its their stance based in greed

comment about turkey not having to do anything for us

shante says:
lol give me a break
shante says:
I never said they had to do anything
shante says:
nor do we have to do anything for them

comment about how Im being childish

shante says:
oh well. Im sick of it...Im sick of this... http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/...ican-usat_x.htm Im sick of all the stupidity

Just because people don't agree with you, nay vehemently argee with you, they all become "stupid," "ignorant," "idiots" and "put us soldiers' lives in danger." Take off your blinders. "I'm sick of it." Ignore list for a few days. Sorry.

because they don’t "agree" with me? Is that all you see here?
It's not about opinions, its about a situation, its about events, its about realities, practicalities, efficiencies, honesty...its about damage being done, people that will suffer more for no good reason...its about what is.

saying the sky is made out of pudding is not an opinion.

this is a dandy btw, I guess you mean "plebs"?
So an election is more important than people's lives?
Making policy on the merits isnt as important as making policy on flawed popular opinion because you want to be elected? You said there would be a "reshuffle" and I read that to say after they appease the masses (and put us in jeopardy) the will begin to make policy on the merits and anyone who doesn’t see that as something to be appreciated is a pleb. Fantastical.

Turkey's Human Rights record is why it couldn't get into the EU this time around.

A tricky one for Bush; pump money in to keep them on side, or leave them be until they reform themselves and maybe see islamism rise there (although the government party is islamist, it isn't anything by standards of the middle east, I don't think).
