I don't read too much into his remaining on the committee, either, really. Dumping him completely would hurt the administration more than slipping him down a notch, and they can always dump him later if things don't die down. If they do, he might re-emerge a la Peter Mandelson.

Perle is, though, only one guy. If this were to form part of a pattern of dubious business links that could all be coherently bundled together come election time, then it might be used to good effect by the democrats (like with Trent Lott; if Lott could be bundled with a pattern of rascist behaviour, then that would hurt, although I am not aware of any more ammo for the democrats there thus far). As it is, the main loser here seems to be Richard Perle, at least for now.
