The new pnuemonia.

Just scrolled across the screen on CNN (euro-version), "more infectious than ebola, possibly originating from an animal".

It certainly has made it's international presence noted, so anyone want to place a bet on what animal it is?

Someone shagged a monkey again?

A llama. To be specific, an alpacas.

TORONTO (CP) — A severe form of pneumonia which is spreading through Asia has struck Canada, killing a mother and her son in Toronto and hospitalizing four other family members.

The disease, known as atypical pneumonia, has also emerged in British Columbia, where one was in intensive care at a Vancouver hospital and another person has recovered, Toronto health officials said late Friday night.

Those crazy asians have brought it to this continent. Some people have been walking around with masks on (the kind you see at the dentist, etc) Keep the elderly and young away.
I've had pnumonia twice, and I'll tell ya it bites the big one. Coughing til you dry heave, not being able to breathe, spitting up green stuff. Shittin like mad because of the antibiotics. mmmmmmmm memories. I wonder if sentinel chickens will help.

Rather unfortunate that the guy who first diagnosed it caught it and died of it.

Clearly sentinel Canadians are the answer. We've already established that they are susceptible to the illness. And what did chickens ever to do deserve that kind of treatment?

I'm going to OOB on the next sunny day and grab a Canadian to strap to the roof of my car. I just hope I'll be able to find one small enough for my car to handle. I only have a Stratus.

hmm:

quote:
Its rapid spread in places like Hong Kong suggests the infectious agent causing the disease, dubbed severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) might be airborne, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Julie Gerberding said on Saturday. Already experts have said the virus could survive for three hours outside the body.

hmm.
quote:
Neither antibiotics nor antiviral medications -- the standard weapons against pneumonia -- have proven effective, WHO spokesman Dick Thompson said. The average incubation period between exposure to a sick person and onset of symptoms is about three days, the WHO spokesman said. The CDC put the incubation period at between two and seven days. The cause of the disease remains a mystery. "We've run almost every flu test we can run and we don't get consistent results," Thompson said. "We get hints here and there, but right now I couldn't tell you if it's a virus or a bacteria. I just don't have any idea."

Hmmm. Perhaps everyone should read "Earth Abides" by George R. R. Martin.

Seems perhaps pertinent here.

i've got a sore throat at the moment. my status is improving, in that i have dropped a couple of symptoms. i don't know what i've got, no. if my progress continues in this fashion i will not go to the doctor.
jesus. i said "prayers", not "bunch of damn questions".

don't worry, it's not pneumonia, atypical or otherwise.

bah. i live in Toronto, which is basically crippled by fear of this thing: four people have died, all have been in DIRECT contact with one kid who came off a plane in china. this is going to be the fatal disease with the LEAST death toll all year, i say.

I read somewhere that they suspect that it's from birds in southern China. (No idea why they suspect that)

10-20% mortality rate if no access to a ventilator!

Overall mortality rate about 4%

An immunologist told me that avian diseases often become human diseases through the mediation of pigs, because pigs can catch disease from both and the disease can mutate inside the pig to attack those elements of the pig that are human (I think that this is all to do with proteins, or something like that).

Mind you, I was drunk when he explained it all to me.

I went through Frankfurt airport the same time, same terminal that chap landed from Asia and came down with super pneumonia. I spent a rather uncomfortable week shitting myself with the slightest cough.
