yeah, why not?If we're gonna complain about human rights in other countries then we should not expect them not to point out our own level of hypocrisy on the issue.

But by the same token wouldn't it be a bit rich for the US to criticize others as well?

The only thing that would matter is whether it is true, I guess. I mean, as a political weapons it is weak, but truth is truth whether or not other countries are worse.

I would have thought that the main area where the US would fall down on human rights would be on its treatment of people in prison, to be honest.

Does anyone have a link to what we said about other countries in our human rights reports? I would venture a guess that we talked less about "man vs. man" crime statistics and more about "opressive government tactics vs. man" ones. I do like China's move though.

err...did any of you actually read that link?
Most of the list is of illegal crimes committed by citizens, then other crimes committed by government workers that were investigated and held accountable if found guilty. And you people are going to equate that with killing dissenters, religious groups and other regular goings on of the Chinese government with a straight face?

I wonder how many American asylum seekers the Chinese government gets regularly.

What a load of bull. Did any of you actually read that thing? The glass ceiling, homelessness, money-driven democracy? Wow, I'm horrified. The US is such a monster!

Give me a break.

I read it; it is all about the governments failure to achieve a 'fair' environment for their people, which is what to a socialist would seem like a failure in human rights but not to someone who doesn't want government involvement. It is a different paradigm altogether.

I would say (again) that if the US has a 'human rights' case to answer with regard to its own citizenry, it would relate to prison conditions (and, nowadays, I guess, to the issues like those of Jose Padilla, although those are at present very limited in number).

Plus application of the death penalty would be a concern, although China's in that boat with us.

...yep, the death penalty, the war on drugs, unfair taxation, much of the patriot act...the US has a long way to go where rights are concerned. But comparing us to China and saying something like "isn't it ruch of us to wave our finger at them" is just absurd. Likewise saying that because we have some of our own human rights abuses we shoulden't use whatever m,eans nescessary to increase human rights in other parts of the world is silly.

It's silly to say that our problems aren't really problems becuase other people have similar problems on a much bigger scale.

huh? Whats simaler? Getting your house and car forfeited because you got busted selling weed and getting your tongue cut out and being tied to a pole to bleed to death for speaking out against the government is simaler problems? Hardly. One is bad but the other is brutal.

gosh itch...cant you under stand? don’t you see?! shooting at spit wad at someone and raping and killing old ladies are both wrong therefore should be treated the same. Anyone who has ever shot a spitwad has no right to complain if someone is going around raping and killing old ladies. Golly gee itch...what ever is wrong with you?

I guess I just don't see the blatent hypocrisy or irony. This to me seems to be a world where the smallest most surface infractions of human rights are magnified a thousand fold and cause protestors to get screaming ugly by the hundreds of thousands while true crimes against humanity such as genocide, brutal opression and the fact that most nations in the world do not have truly representative Governments is simply swept under the rug and ignored.

People simply hate America. It has almost nothing to do with "human rights" as it does anti-Americanism. Despots and dictators are loving it.

If I were to suggest that some more gun control should be brought by the Federal Government, you would probably protest very strongly. It would probably seem more important to you than the plight of the chechens, say, and understandably so. Even though the situation that the average chechen finds himself in is rather worse.

In addition to all that, we have very high standards (I would say) on human rights, and we are proud of them, in which context I think that it is right that we should be called upon to uphold them.

by who's definitions are those 'human rights violations'? If someone steals my car the US violated my human rights? what the fuck!? And how the fuck can any of you argue the merits of this article with any tone of seriousness?
