Driving under the influence

Have you ever driven under the influence? Could be drunk, or whilst on drugs, or whatever.

I have driven under the influence approx 6 times. 3 times, it was when I was over the legal limit for alcohol (only 2 of those were 'fuckin pissed' the other was 'had 3 pints, been a hour since I finished the last, I'm alright'), once when on ecstasy (universally stupid but man what a fuckin rush), and a few times whilst stoned (hated it, became paraoid I was going too fast when I was in fact going too slow, and I generally avoid it at all costs if possible)

The 'fuckin pissed' and ecstasy occassions, were in fairness in the middle of nowhere on my own at 4amish Sunday. By middle of nowehere I mean the Chilterns Hill's which is largely forest and winding single track country lanes. That is no excuse of course though, I was an idiot for doing it. Mind you the whole point when you are that far gone is that you are that far gone that you don't know or realise that you are that far gone (again not a justifcation, more an observation). If I had killed or injured anyone I would have taken the punishment and responsibility. Thank god I didn't.

So yeah. You done it?

Once... a couple of weeks after I got my licence. I drove my guitarist home after a drunken practice session. I dont remember driving home... and when I woke up the next morning, I realized what I have done.

I was scared shitless... and will never do it again

Many times when I was young and stupid. Never had an accident though and never got stopped by the fuzz. There were three or four times when only by the Grace of God and my familiarity with the countryside I made it home. All that was long long ago. People who do that now are idiots--I was lucky.

Some people I know drive like absolute fucking maniacs when sober, but after three beers drive like they are re-sitting their driving test.

A drunk driver killed my brother. He was 29, and left behind a six-year-old son and a wife who watched him die.

Yet if I ever met the man who killed him, I'd probably have nothing to say. I don't hate him (unless he's killed others in the meantime), but I won't be inviting him to any family gatherings, either. It just is. I'm usually in bars and hotels on the weekend (as an Entertainer, I should point out. Those rumors of my whoredom notwithstanding).

On one hand, the drinking/driving laws in California have gotten so tough that you have to avoid driving by breweries to keep from setting off the breath-o-meter (or whatever they call those things). This is good.

On the other hand, Musicians make shit money nowadays. I used to make at least $150-200 a night on weekends twenty years ago (standard gig pay was $1,000 for five pieces) and now it's down to about $250-300. Bars can't make the bucks to pay for live music. (One good thing about karaoke, though: it's a terrific way to find a lead singer who is actually grateful to be in a band and won't give you any shit.)

I'm all for banning smoking in bars, too. And I'm a smoker. Damn, bars smell a lot better now, and you can go home at 3 AM after playing all evening and not have bloodshot eyes and reek like an ashtray in a urinal. It's taken everybody a while to get used to (I gather it's tough not to smoke when you drink, I wouldn't know), but overall it's worth it.

So no to drinking and driving, for me. It's almost as dangerous as posting pictures of someone talking on a telephone.

I am sorry to hear about your brother, P_T.

I have only ever driven after a drink once, and that was one pint (so completely legal). I don't drink anything and drive, or at least I haven't done apart from that once.

I think one time I drove when I had been drinking, but maybe one or two drinks, and it was either I drive home, or let dad (who had had far more than I).

Of course, he does it all the time anyway...

Once.

From Berea Mission to Hlotse-Leribe in Lesotho. I had gone to a party at the Bishop's house at the mission with a friend, a local Greek shopkeeper, who had stated he would not be drinking that night. It was a large party, and I lost track of Costa through the evening. When the party started dying out and I found him, he was near passed out.

After pouring him into his Jaguar, I drove us back to Hlotse-Leribe, about 12 miles on a damned narrow, twisty 2 lane tarmac road that wound down the side of one kopje and up the side of another. Two miles before our destination the hardtop ended, and from there it was a one lane washboard dirt track to his house, another 800 feet in elevation.

It scared me so badly that I decided never again. I not only have never driven drunk since then, I have never been drunk since then. That was in 1979.

I've driven drunk on many occasions in SA, most of the time because it was a quiet road home, not really something to be boasting about. I so easily could have wrecked someones life, I don't have to now because the pubs close at 11pm and there are a plethora of cabs around.

Yes. I have. Glancing back over a year of sobriety I wonder how it is that I never got arrested or hurt somebody. I feel terrible that I gambled with other people's lives so carelessly. Now I am the ultra- designated driver. All of my friends know that they can call me at ANY time and I will make sure they get home safely.

Well, I've never driven while intoxicated. However, I've seen many a report that says driving while sleepy is like driving drunk. Unfortunately, I've driven while sleepy more times than I can remember. I haven't since sometime last year when I woke up early one morning on the Hollywood Freeway in a construction zone. I don't remember getting there. I don't remember pulling into the construction zone. Apparently, I had enough prescence of mind to turn off the engine and all. Though, I did have the radio on. Go figure. Though, it's not usually a safe thing to pull over and sleep in that area. I guess I was protected by the big cranes and junk.

never driven drunk...driven after a few drinks but those are always followed by a large meal...now high as a kite on various drugs is another story...i partied HARD for..8 or 9 years...the first year or so i wouldnt drive..then at one party i was the most sober (or so we thought) out of the bunch and drove home..and from then on i was usually the driver...of course it was always my car..and noone drives it cept me or if im to fucked up..one of my best friends...ive driven on lsd and xtc more times then i could count...i found that i can drive better then most sober people..and these times were almost always at 4..5am and my motto was "that car is either a cop or fucked up like me"...never had an accident...got pulled over by a cop once about 2 hours after taking a 10 strip of gel tabs...didnt think they were good so me and my friend left to go home...sure nuff they kicked in on the highway was i was driving 55-60mph...i came upon 3 semis...a single ...a double and a triple all in a line...i passed one...and the other 2 were (in my mind) swerving with the wind so i wanted to pass them ASAP and get them out of my view..so i did..i kicked it up to 70-75mph and crested a hill with a bridge and a Hwy Patrol Officer on the other side...this was about 4am... I was obviously caught and pulled off on the next bridge to try and lose him but there was a red light and whatnot and i got pulled over...i was tripping balls..period. He came to the car and asked for the usual...i had my lic and reg and my insurance paper was in the glove box. Got the usual "find it, ill be right back" i couldnt answer much...his badge and uniform was melting and swirling...i opened the glove box and the contents spilled all over the passenger side...he came back and i handed him about every piece of paper in my car cept the insurance...he let me off with goin 71 in a 55 and we left...with our hearts in our throats and scared shitless. another time there was morning mist..i saw it swirling and could have sworn the sky turned green (like it does in MN when a storm is a commin) and i could have sworn we were in the eye of a tornado...

but like mugtoe...im not proud of any of them...stupid to do..yes...would i do it again...probably because many of the times my friends couldnt sit up much less drive and i had to get them home safe...this being i was the shepard in the group...but ive seen many many many wrecks after partys where i was sure drugs were involved and im so very glad none of my friends were ever in any of them...

Same here. Used to drive aligning the stripe with the hood ornament in order to avoid the ditches.

Ain't cool; ain't funny. Just stupid as hell.

Amen.

I've driven under the influence of marijuana twice. The first time I ever smoked pot I wound up driving my friends home after. I have a difficult time driving at night anyway (oncoming headlights nearly blind me) but add being stoned on that and it was a very interesting ride. I nearly hit some guy on a motorcycle (but it was his fault anyway) and I got paranoid when I saw some twinkeling lights in my rear view mirror.

Then while I was living in Iowa I smoked some pot with some friends and drove home after watching "Rush Hour 2" (which I might add is only funny while high). I did pretty well with the exception of coming to a stop about four car lengths away from the red light at one point. To get to my apartment building I had to drive past the Dubuque Police Department so I was pretty paranoid there (and before I got high I had seen cops everywhere, so that really added to the paranoia).

Will I do it again? No.

Am I proud of it? No.

Am I ashamed? No.

When I go out dancing we usually meet over at my friend Robin's house. The girls take shots straight up of hard liquor, about 5 a piece. They won't go to the club until they are feeling high as fuck. The problem is, they try to drive. When I go I offer to drive, but they go out a hell of a lot more than I do, say 5 nights a week. One of them already had a DWI but drives drunk almost nightly. It's scary to think they are on the road like this, because they often tell me they are swerving so badly they have to pull off the road and wait a while (or pass out).

lu: they're your friends. do something about it. if they respect you and your opinions, they'll consider what you have to say (especially since you're right in this instance). if they don't, why the fuck do you hang around with people that stupid anyway?

and what are you going to do the night one of them calls you sobbing, telling you how they think they hit someone on the way home?
