A drunk driver killed my brother. He was 29, and left behind a six-year-old son and a wife who watched him die.
Yet if I ever met the man who killed him, I'd probably have nothing to say. I don't hate him (unless he's killed others in the meantime), but I won't be inviting him to any family gatherings, either. It just is. I'm usually in bars and hotels on the weekend (as an Entertainer, I should point out. Those rumors of my whoredom notwithstanding).
On one hand, the drinking/driving laws in California have gotten so tough that you have to avoid driving by breweries to keep from setting off the breath-o-meter (or whatever they call those things). This is good.
On the other hand, Musicians make shit money nowadays. I used to make at least $150-200 a night on weekends twenty years ago (standard gig pay was $1,000 for five pieces) and now it's down to about $250-300. Bars can't make the bucks to pay for live music. (One good thing about karaoke, though: it's a terrific way to find a lead singer who is actually grateful to be in a band and won't give you any shit.)
I'm all for banning smoking in bars, too. And I'm a smoker. Damn, bars smell a lot better now, and you can go home at 3 AM after playing all evening and not have bloodshot eyes and reek like an ashtray in a urinal. It's taken everybody a while to get used to (I gather it's tough not to smoke when you drink, I wouldn't know), but overall it's worth it.
So no to drinking and driving, for me. It's almost as dangerous as posting pictures of someone talking on a telephone.
