Relegation
As it stands, my football team (West Ham United) are going to be relegated from the top football division today. Bolton are winning their game against Boro and we are drawing with Birmingham City.
I would have felt bad about putting Bolton back down, because they deserve to be in the top flight; I would've been very happy if we had put Leeds out of the Premier Leage (I can't call it the 'premiership', it sounds retarded), but they saved themselves by beating Arsenal last week (and coincidentally handing the title to the scumbags that are Man Utd).
The main downside is not a season or more in the first division, but that we will lose our best players. Trevor Brooking stayed with us as a player for 3 years after relegation in 1977 (we won the FA cup in the same season that we won the division to get promoted back to the top division), but that doesn't happen now. Even if they wanted to stay, the chances are that we could not afford their wages with the loss of the television money that relegation brings.
I sort of think that maybe the premier league should be smaller anyway, but something has to be done to enliven the competition. As it is, the relegation battles provide more interest (albeit at a lower standard) than the race for the Championship does. If it wasn't for Arsenal managing to maintain a comparable standard to Man Utd even though their turnover is only 1/3rd that of Utd's, there wouldn't be any colour to the Championship at all. It can't be long before people just get bored of the whole thing if a couple of clubs dominate so much.
Anyway. Looks like it's goodbye for West Ham for a while.
